Glad to be here though I can't say how often I can drop in, life being what it is. A warning... my husband says that I can talk underwater so my posts are kinda long.

I guess I'm a farmgirl wantabe. My folks sold their old farmhouse in Pennsylvania last year after 34 years so that's gone leaving me here in, ahhh, suburbia in Texas wondering how THAT happened. Our dream was to move out into the country, maybe get a horse or a donkey, so we looked at little ranches but my husband got ill (MS) and we've wound up in a newish house on 1 acre that's left of an old farm (got a ruin of a chimney out back). I'm not unhappy about living in a place that doesn't need work 24/7 but I am unhappy about the mountain lion on our driveway that a neighbor saw in June.

Where am I? Not out in the boonies by any shot. We're in North Texas only 30 minutes north of DFW Airport, 2 miles from SuperWalmart and 4 miles from the mall. Right now we're rejoicing as we finally got an inch of rain which might keep the fires away. People who are out of town or on the edges have had field fires though west of here is where it's worse. We're near what's getting to be a dried up lake with woods on two sides. I wanted to have critters like my mom grew up with (guinea hens) -- chickens, ducks, but with the coyotes and the mountain lion scare, I can't. Round here there are racoons the size of small dogs, coyotes, and squirrels that have destroyed most of my feeders. As we're near a big road, we have baby buzzards skimming along the ravine near us and in the spring we have baby ospreys keening as they leave a nearby pond which is now dry.

Other than that, my husband and I have been married for, gosh, nearly 23 years and have 3 daughters 14, 10, and 7 being late starters (fool that I was I thought having kids late would mean that we could better afford them). When younger and with more time I used to have time to do crafts and sewing and now that I've got room to swing a cat, having converted our spare garage to a craft room, am ready to start the girls on various projects. This site seems ideal for ideas.

wow, i cant believe all the texas gals posting. i am in north texas , in bonham, and have a small farm,16 acreas, with a small herd of colored angora goats, chickens and multiple cats. i wanted to mention tokitsune that we have no trouble with predators out here and i think it is because we have a pyrenes. also goats and cats are great about keeping the snakes away, as this area does have copperheads and we have only seen dead ones here.
the pyrenes are wonderful, mbut be sure and get a puppy, not an adult so they can bond with your family and livestock.

Hi Scubacoz,

Had to reply when I saw that you lived at Medina Lake, when I was a kid we used to take vacation at Medina Lake. I had an uncle who use to bar-b-que goat and we would camp-out with like 9 other cousins and boy was the lake cold, even in summer... Now I'm talking in the 50's. Catherine started the "Southern Fried Farmgirl" chapter and I participate in that. I think she's taking us strawberry pickin next week, sounds like it will be a lot of fun!! Glad to see all these Texas Gals on-board !

Another Texas gal lhere. I live 18 miles west of San Antonio in a very small town called Mico,Texas it is also called Medina Lake. We are in MEDINA county. We have been out here for 3 years now on 12.5 acres. So far i only have 5 dogs all under 10 lbs. lol Have been looking into building a chicken coop so we can get some chickens out here and also want to get some goats but we have to fence in the area first.I am new to this forum so do not really know how to get around in here yet. I am married with 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren My youngest son is getting married March 18, so we have been very busy with wedding plans. As soon as the wedding is over its getting serious about getting a chicked cook time. My neighbor has chickens and wants us to split a order with him come May. So I need any help that I can get from all the experienced ladies here Kathy in Texas

Hi there - I'm in Dallas. Downtown in a loft to be precise, so I'm still dreaming at this point. The rain was wonderful, I'm hoping to move to the Seattle area in the next few months. I'll have access to a remote cabin and five acres while I put things together to get my own place. Very excited. Nice to meet y'all.

That is hilarious-- I went to Hockaday for my highschool years. Even boarded my freshman year! Didn't figure I'd find any other Hockadaisies on here! I was also a small town girl thrown into the big city, but during my sophmore year, my parents moved into Dallas, so I was a little more accepted. Two of my best friends in the world graduated with me, and have also moved back to Dallas in the last year (they were both "lifers" that didn't really "fit in" with all the others). And stories-- boy do I have 'em too... the granddaughters of the Perot's were there just as I was leaving--- bodyguards and all! and the Bush twins... but they left when he became governor. Isn't it funny the strange the things we have in common!

Hey Kitsune,

Even if the corduroys last beyond the month, you should still make those treasures out of'em. I have way too many keepsake clothing items waiting to be transformed. Every time I go through the stacks and boxes and bags I have at least a dozen reasons not to get rid of each one! I did actually go through my husbands t-shirt "collection" and cut'em up. Those pieces will be made into an oh so soft comfy throw quilt.....one day.

You mentioned Hockaday.... I was a border student there for my sophomore and junior years of high school! There I was.... a big fish from a little pond....at this school full of tons of bigger fishes! There were girls there from all over the world....daughters of presidents from other countries, daughters of political leaders, and me....just a small town cajun girl looking for a way to get out of small town. One of my classmates was Caroline Perot....Ross Perot's daughter. She was one of the richest gals there and yet was the most sweet and down to earth girl. So many of the other "rich" class girls were horribly mean and rude to anyone that was lower on the "food chain". She was everyone's friend and never was mean. I went to a couple of parties at her home....BIG and beautiful. Her parents were just as nice and regular as she was.

OH, the stories I have about my years there. I'll just say this....toward the end of my junior year, I caused enough havoc that I was not invited back for the next year. Oh well!!

Blessings
Catherine

Cajungirl, thanks for the advice on Houston/Galveston. We won't be there long -- DH has a conference in Houston most of the time, but I want to drag the girlies out on either Friday or Saturday to Galveston. Now that we've got a Toyota Sienna, we can better survive the journey from Corinth/Denton. And didn't everyone in the area LOVE the rain we got this Friday am? I wasn't happy that I left my bike out though. The 7 year old is working on riding a 2 wheeled bike without crashing so you can guess what we've been up to. Fortunately she's wearing the knees ripped out TINY Barbie pink corduroys that all 3 girls loved. If they survive another month, I think I'm going to cut them up and make her a pillow out of them. Maybe save part of each leg for her bigger sisters to make into quilts when/if we do that.

Oh, maybe a certain librarian would like to get herself up to Denton this Saturday the 4th February. There's a WONDERFUL garage sale on Jamestown (get to East University Drive in North Denton near loop 288 and take Nottingham north to Mistywood to the west. Rumor has it that the dear deceased owner was a librarian in Dallas and at the Hockaday school. There are HUNDREDS of books, especially children's in a room that's got to be about 20 x 20 (and there's a Cold War era bunker under that!). Books go 1/2 price on Saturday after 1pm. Trouble is I don't have the shelf space here.....I did buy a great book on Medieval Village Life.

I love all y'all Texas gals. We've just started our chapter down here. We haven't gotten a name yet because all the names we choose have already been taken. Looks like all us Texas gals think alike. It's funny....just tonight I was thinking about Howdy Y'all Farmgirls. Welp, guess that's taken.

Look forward to chatting soon!

Hey Texas FarmGirls!!!

I am behind on my post reading and trying to catch up today. I live in Parker County on a tiny farm and about a year ago I started the Howdy Ya'll Texas Farm Girl Chapter. We currently have about 3 members and would love to have more. Perhaps this would be a good time to get together and really make the Howdy Ya'll Chapter sing Yippee!!!

Let me know if you are interested. I work as a librarian in Fort Worth and commute in every day from Parker Country (about 40 miles). I will be in Dallas on Friday Feb 3 and generally come to the city- Dallas- about once every other month to see family and friends. I can also easily come to Denton or we could gather in Fort Worth where the West begins.

Catherine and other Texas Farm Girls!! Even if you can't get to North Texas, you must be members also.

I am so excited and hope that others are also.

Hi Kitsune and welcome from a Texas-gal. I'm in Wichita Falls, so not too far from you. Wasn't that rain nice? We sure need a lot more of it. Anyways, welcome.

There is so much to see and do in both Houston and Galveston. Oh, and the food!!! Yummy!!
Some of the museums have free Thursdays....worth looking into. The Aquarium restaurant in Houston is cool but the food is expensive and not that great. For the same money you can go to the Aquarium in Galveston. (not a restaurant, actual educational touring aquarium, but has a restaurant)

Something free and really neat in Galveston is the Kemp's Ridley Turtle Research Center. They have self guided tours and tours with a guide. There are tons of turtles of every size there that are being cared for until they can be released. We visit there often.

Email me before y'all come...I'd love to meet ya'.

Lacy, wow, Plano. Was just there on Friday night with a bunch of Brownies at an amateur ballet of Beauty and the Beast. The most popular part was when the Beast burps and Belle faints. And cajungal, we'll be heading down to Houston in March with my husband who's on business and the kids are wild about it. Hope to hit most of the downtown museums in one day and maybe touch Galveston the next.

Howdy Kitsune!!
Big Texas Welcome from a fellow Lone Star gal. I'm down by Houston.....just about 4 hours from ya'. We got some of y'all's rain and it's helped. There were some pretty big fires southwest of us but nothing too near.
You are going to love it here....lots of friendly people. I look forward to hearing more about your life. Aunt Jenny is right.....there is a lot you can do on one acre. In fact, our home is called, "One Acre Farm" and we have farm critters, house critters and a great garden that supplies enough for me to can and dehydrate with some to share and sell, too! Have Fun!!

Blessings

Thanks all. It's up to 70F today and I just discovered that the pre-emergent I put on last week (a whole two months early) probably won't stop the dreaded burrs in the yard. Kids are gonna have to wear shoes outside in the summer and won't be happy.

Welcome!
A mountain lion! Wow! Can't say we've got any of them around here in Suburbia, IL! We rarely even have the pleasure of a few squirrels gracing our yard! Wild animals are better than none at all! Glad to hear you're getting rain. You can have all the snow that's on the ground here, I'm getting sick of it! I'm just getting into crafting and sewing myself. What do you like to make?

Much love,
Laura
