Hello Farmgirls!
My name is Karin and I come from Sweden. I´m a photographer and might also some day become a farmgirl, if my dreams come true...
In the end of this month I´m going to the USA to do my degree project in photojournalism. I´m going to spend about four weeks in the state of Arkansas. My project is going to be about women in farming, and I´m therefore very lucky to have found this forum! The photographs from this project is going to be in an exhibition at an art gallery in Sweden and also be published in a magazine among other reports and pictures from USA.
My hopes are to get in touch with a farmgirl who live and work in Arkansas, maybe you can help me? And I´m also thankful for all information you can give me on this topic.
Hope to hear from you Farmgirls, I´m thankful for all the help you can give me! If you want to know more about my photography and my aim with this project, please let me hear from you!
Best regards Karin Malmhav

It's so depressing to see all those old barns deteriorate.......and so many farmers selling or losing their land.

Jeannie,
I do b/w and color. I had always hoped to have a darkroom one day. I took a couple of classes in college and did very well. The most fun was developing the film, watching that white piece of paper change was amgical evertime I developed a photo. I used to live in Sycamore and now I live in Hinckley which is about 10 miles straight south.

I also took a bunch of photos of graveyards in England when I was there. Beautiful ancient headstones. I need to spend a weekend with my mom in Indiana and take photos of all of my ancesters headstones. My family history goes back a couple of 100 yrs in the Northeast corner of the state.

Kim, I photograph barns, too, and have taken many photos of the barns in the areas you live near, i.e. Cherry Valley and Sycamore, and the surrounding areas. One winter, I spent the whole day taking photos in 20 degree temps in December. my camera was not liking the cold! Someday those wonderful barns will be gone, but I hope someone will save a few. I also have taken lots of photos of the private graveyards in the northern Illinois area., many of which reside on farms owned by families for generations.

Do you do black and white?

Karin, Iowa is the heart of the midwest farm country, so that is definately a good place to start your trip. I think you will find a warm welcome wherever you go, as there are strong Scandanivian ties in all parts of the country...even me! My mother's family came directly from Norway in the late 1800's too! Let us know if there's a web site that will be developed to showcase the work of you students...I would love to have a look! Sounds so interesting! Best of luck!

Hi Jeannie and other farmgirls!
I understand that you have questions about my choice of state for this project. I know there are so many other places that is better for this project. We are 16 student who are doing different projects and we are going to be located in eight states that our techer choosed for us.
Nice to here that you are Scandinavian! Offcourse I know of Carl Larsson, he´s one of Swedens greatest artists. We have a cooperation with a similiar education at the University of Iowa, so we are goning there first.
I´ll hope we´ll keep in touch!
Thanks!/ Karin

Welcome, Karin! I am Norwegian by bloodline, though my family came to America in the early 1800's and settled in Iowa and Minnesota, where many Scandanavian folks farmed and still farm. We have many Swedes in our family, too, and I feel a real affection for Swedish people. We are so glad you have found this site, and I look forward to hearing more about your photojournalism project. Arkansas is not that far (?) from Florida, and perhaps you can visit here while you are in America!

Are you familiar with the paintings and books of Carl Larsson? I have been infatuated with them for 20 years, because they show so beautifully the farm life of Sweden in a simpler time. His wife's name was Karin.

You will find friendly, helpful people here!

Question: Why the state of Arkansas? It is a beautiful place, but there are so many farm states, I was just curious as to how that one came to be your choice. Is your trip affiliated with a certain university?

Hello Karin, Welcome to the forum, I found your post and your project really interesting. Please keep us updated on your work. Of course you can see that the women and information they share here could be really valuable to your project. One book mentioned on the reading page was Country Women. It might be out of print but maybe you could pick it up on ebay. I just subscribed to a very upbeat and positive international news magazine, that might interest you for a business contact?? If you haven't already seen it(it's been out in Europe since 1995. It just started to publish in the US. out of Madison WI. It's called ODE and the person responsible for contacts with Photographers is Brenda Leensvaart www.odemagazine.com The focus is not farming but they touch on important issues like organics and the people who care about farming. Perhaps this is the magazine you mentioned??? I wish the best of luck to you. Kathy

Welcome Karin! Wow! Wish you the best of luck on your project. Glad you found us! I have visited Sweden and I was taken by its beauty and the friendly people. I long to return for another visit. Perhaps you could arrange a side trip to visit MaryJane's farm in Idaho. That would provide you with alot of useful information and great photo opportunities, too.
