Hi,
I joined this forum a couple of days ago. Where i live most people call their place a "ranch" rather than farm and we probably wouldn't qualify for either since we are only 5 acres but nonetheless ranch is what we call it  . So i guess i can qualify as a farm girl wannabe. This is a rural area of So. California, dirt roads, rural route mail delivery, etc. and we are about 5 miles from town which is just a whistle stop. We have some livestock, a horse, couple of mules and donkeys. The horse is retired and we ride and pack the mules and ride the largest donkey.
We are going to try to have some chickens again after a long period of not having them. We have bob cats here and they have been a problem in the past. We are in the process of building a bob cat proof (we hope) chicken coop. We are going to build a solid roof across the entire structure rather than have a wire top on the run area - a wire top on the run has been our downfall in the past. I think it would be so nice to be able to allow chickens to run loose but we have too many predators - coyotes, hawks, previously mentioned bob cats, etc. - domestic cats and small dogs are even at risk around here. We enjoy seeing the wild animals but prefer not to feed them, particularly not our family members.
I also garden a bit, have some veggies in a small kitchen garden which is in use pretty much year round. Also have what i call my "Secret Garden" tucked into our front yard. It has a small patch of buffalo grass and a small pond. There are some old fashioned climbing roses and a few flower beds behind a 6' cedar fence. We also have quite a few large pine trees to give us shade and shelter us from the hot, dry desert winds.
I love to read, enjoy cooking and trying new recipes and i sew some - a little quilting and general sewing but don't do that as much as i used to because the outdoor work takes up so much of my time. |
