Keeper of the Past |
Posted - Aug 14 2008 : 1:32:07 PM Hello everyone, I live in Northeast Missouri with my husband and our daughter Angie. We live on a farm and have cattle and sheep. To see pictures of our farm you can go to coffmanspinningcfarm.blogspot.com . I love my sheep and the wool they produce. About 50 head now...and each has a name and personality. I have registered Shetland Sheep, corriedales, Oxfords and a few polypays. I spin, weave, and knit. I also like to felt and Angie is also involved in the weaving, felting and dying of the wool. She also has a soft spot for our woolie friends. I am a keeper of the past. I desire the simple ways. My grandmother was an old farm lady that had been raised in a home with paid servants. She married my grandpa that was a poor farmer and chose to live his life style of raising animals and row cropping. She believed in wearing bonnets...still have the slanted bonnet she made me wear. She was a very good southern cook, she enjoyed needlework of all kinds. I have many dolies, tea towels, pillow cases, and crochet items. I also have the gloves that she would make me wear when we were out in the sun hanging up clothes or in the garden. She tried to tell me back then that ladies kept their skin covered and not exposed to the sun or you would look old and wrinkled as you got older...She was right! I also watched her render lard out in a big black kettle, make soap, bake biscuits every morning and her coffee had an aroama that would make you want to get out of that soft feather bed in the morning. As long as I can keep the past...I can keep the memories of a wonderful grandmother that passed away a year ago at the age of 106. In June I saw my first copy of Mary Jane's Magazine and I have read it over and over. I picked it up at the local Tractor Supply store...just got the new issue...I am hooked. Don't you just love that chicken house? I might even get me a few hens. I have grandma's old wire egg basket...you know she collected hen and rooster items back in the 50's to decorate her home and so when I got married in 1970, my kitchen theme has been hen and chickens ever since. I also like the aprons. I have not had one on for years but I notice that I talk to my daughter about a new design for an apron for me to wear while in the kitchen...we look at each other and chuckle. I wore cowboy boots, had quarter horses, and drove equipment until a couple of years ago when I had some health problems. Now I am a lady of the house and garden and care for my sheep. I am also a registered nurse that works as a school nurse after working many years in the field of Home health and Hospice and later in the Mental Health Field. Maybe my jobs have made this transition from to this farm that sits out in the middle of somewhere beautiful 24 miles. Thanks for letting me be part of your gang...got to go...got to go to town to buy supplies tonight. Sarita

Posted - Aug 14 2008 : 4:03:31 PM Sarita, what a beautiful name! Does it have a special meaning?
I am so with you on the henhouse, girl. It's got me seriously thinking about getting some baby chicks come next spring. Like you, I have my grandmother's egg basket but here's was a wooden splint basket. Wouldn't it make them smile if we used them for gathering our own eggs?
You have some wonderful memories of your grandmother. It's a treasure to have that heritage.
So glad to see another farmgirl from Missouri. The numbers just keep on a-growin'!!!
God bless - Karen
