My Grandparents were homesteaders after WWII. I spent every summer at their farm while I grew up. I lived every where from NYC to a primitive cabin in the mountains as a kid but never really felt like there was one place that I was from. My parent divorced and that added to the feeling of placeless-ness.
Several months ago my Grandma died. I went up to the farm to take care of her for the last few days and I spent some time talking to my Aunt and Uncle. Finally my uncle said "How can you not know where you are from, you're from right here".
Two years ago, I found MJs magazine and subsequently bought everything else she wrote. But I read them with longing and wistfulness since I wasn't really a farm girl and was quite sure that I was not tough enough or resourceful enough to be one.
But it turns out that I was a farmgirl all along.
We live in town but have 20 acres a few miles away where we raise calves for beef. Last year was our first attempt and we learned a lot. This year we are raising 20. We are also looking at a tiny farm (8 acres) that we could live on. Today, I am cleaning a chicken coop so we can put our chicks in it tomorrow. I am looking forward to having chickens but owing to my childhood farm chores, I will never ever ever pluck another chicken.
My greatest recent accomplishment was pounding and stringing a very straight fence. I get all kinds of happy when I see it. I have 6 kids and an amazing hubby. I am looking forward to being part of your adventures and sharing mine.

Hannah!!!! Wow girl, 6 kids...that is amazing! I just have two, but the oldest makes up for 3 I believe!!! Can't wait to share adventures!

Hannah - I loved reading about you! 6 kids, stringing fence, wanting to put down roots - you know that is the thing I love about this site!!!! We get to meet people like you - real farmgirls plowin' through, and it is so reassuring to know there are still so many of folks like you in our country! Welcome!

So sorry I missed you! My friends said that you were there. We got delayed getting out of town and didn't arrive until Friday evening. It is sooooo beautiful in that area. Hope you had fun. I know we did.

I am jealous..how fun to get to go to the rendevous! I havn't been to one in years. You will have to tell us all about it!

Sherone, I'm going to the rendevous too tomorrow! I haven't been before so I am pretty excited. My hubby has to stay home because he is getting calves delivered tomorrow. But my best friend and kids and I will be having a grand old time there. |

I have lived on a farm for 38 years. Never had chickens. Had neighbors that did and kept us in eggs. My husband got an itch for some chickens, so now we have 2 roosters (that crow day and night) and 5 hens. They roam everywhere. I love to hear them. One of the hens will eat out of my hand.

Howdy from Texas Hannah! We're so glad you found us and made it here. I know exactly what you mean about being uprooted and living in so many places you don't know where you're from. Like you I was lucky enough to be taken in by relatives-an aunt and uncle-on a farm. Years later after my parents and aunt passed I spent time talking to my uncle. Just like yours he said "How can you not know? You're from right here. You're a country girl if ever I've seen one". He was darn right too!
Kudos on the fence-I have yet to attempt that. I know it's a lot harder than it looks. You go girl!
And good luck on the chickens-I think you'll enjoy them!
