I am just starting my "urban farm" I am over the moon excited to be getting my chickens this week. I have been gardening for the last 10 years, and have decided to move to the next level. Although this is about as high as I can go living within a community ;) I can't wait to teach my kids about chickens and eggs and learn a thing or two myself as we go along.

Life on my little "farmette" gets crazy. 3kids,2dogs,3chickens. Life is good...

Lisa:

I'm from Kannapolis, but I've been to the OBX twice. It is a beautiful place! Are you near the vineyards? Been there, ummm good wine! We have 4 girls(chickens). My hubby and I made an A-frame coup. The girls lay in the moring and early afternoon, then ramble around until dark. They're spoiled since I bring home food scraps from work. When I come home, they come running for their treat. I really enjoy seeing them sunbathe, take dirt baths and chase bugs. We also have 3 cats, but they all live in harmony.

Welcome Lisa! Nice to meet you!

I just got in from painting the inside of our new coop. It got too dark to see. We changed our plans a bit and decided on a different design. I think we will be a lot happier in the end. I am painting the inside with high gloss paint so as to make it scrubable. I have heard from quite a few now that the smell isn't what you expect and when we are only having 3 it can't be any worse than dog poop!!

You are right about the beaches, we avoid VA Beach because of the crowds and never finding a parking place. We also like to take the truck out on the beach. It is so much fun and the kids have a blast!! Looking forward to camping out on the beach with the kids this year. They have been waiting to do it all year.

Hello Lisa,
We returned from vacationing on the OBX last week. We visited Ocracoke Island, Hatteras, and Nags Head. My favorite part of the OBX is that the beaches are just as God made them and there are no crowds. We love going there.

Blessings with your farmette (I love the term). I do not have chickens, however, we are contemplating it. One thing my grandmother always talked about with chickens was the mess they make. I am not in favor of that. Maybe if we have a coop with a chicken lot and have them contained. I am interested in fresh eggs. We will see.

We live at the beginning of the OBX closer to VA. We dream of one day owning a bit of land, but live contently in our nice golf course community. We have a very spacious yard, and I refer to it as my "farmette" because we always tease I should have married a farmer 8) After we build the coop this weekend and pick up my 3 girls I will be on the hunt for apple trees. I am originally from Biglerville PA home of Musselman's apple plant. Most of my girlfriends parents owned orchards so I would like to bring a little of home here to NC. I know a thing or two about apples.

Hey Lisa...we go to OBX every year (though we do NOT have a car sticker that says OBX)...we vacation in Avon. I was actually surprised by the beautiful old farmhouses on the sound side in Avon...lovely old places, and quite a bit of land, to boot!

Where do you hail from?

Hi Lisa,
Welcome! I love the OBX. My husband and I and his family vacation there every year. We always stay at a house in Salvo. We are going this year the last week in July. It would be so cool to get to meet another farm girl.
Hugs,
Robin

Welcome Lisa, nice meeting you! I'm a bit like you, my husband and I bought our place 4 years ago and we are learning as we go. Even though I've lived in a rural area/farms most of my life there's still plenty to learn. There's a wealth of information to learn from the fellow farmgirls here and we can learn from you as well. Glad you are here.

I love the outer banks. The beaches there are so lovely. We vacationed there a couple of years ago in late sept. The weather was great and we were literally the only ones on the beach at times.

I can't wait to get out of a subdivision so chickens are an option for us. My kids want them so badly.
