Hey Ya'll, I was glad to find out about this website. It seems like a group of great women! My husband and I moved to small town Utah to have horse property. We love it! I told him about this group and he was excited for me to join. I look forward to getting to know you gals!

We did a rambler with a big porch on the front. My husband really wanted the inside open, so the kitchen and family room and wide open. I don't know that the style other than having a rambler was all we really focused on. We mostly focused on the inside space.
I wish we would have done it a little different. I really want to live in a cottage or farm style house, but convincing my husband of that isn't so easy. Oh well.
I love keeping some of the old for the new also! That is way cool you found a sickle and draw knife. We found most of our stuff in the old barn. I have tons of milking pails and silverware. I want to put the silverware in a shadow box. I also found an old pair of wooden snow skis (sp?) and an original Saturday night fever shirt. I have tons of glass bottles too. It was like a treasure hunt for me!!!
How much longer until your house is done?

Cool that you saved the door and rbinck and stone. We have tons of stone around our new house and are using it for walkways and steps outside the house. I considered using some inside but haven't yet.
We are still building our new house and I have the big iron floor grate from the house I grew up in to use and my DH has an old draw knife for using in the woods he wants to hang on the wall. We also found a sickle when we were digging for the new house we'll display when we are done. I love bringing some of the old into the new place.
What style of house did you build? We tried to do a farm house style but maintain as much of the open concept inside that works so well for our family.

Ada Mae, your farm sounds awesome! My husband and I keep talking about selling our place in a couple of years and moving to something bigger! We want to raise cows and have lots of land too! I hear Kentucky is gorgeous! I love to visit there one day. From what I've heard of the culture though, it seems a little intimidating! I only hear about the really rich people with the hundred thousand dollar horses and million dollar farms though. Isn't Blue Grass pretty big there, or is that a generalization? I love Blue Grass!
Congrats on your 4 grandkids! From what I hear, grandkids are great! I just started having my own kids. I have a 9 month old and one in the oven. We're excited to raise our kids on a farm though. I grew up in Salt Lake and loved it, but always wanted to raise my kids in the country. It is so much nicer having fresh air and water. It's hard to go to the city now that I've been spoiled!
What grade did you teach? I teach 11th and 12th grade Special Ed. I like it, but can't wait to be home with my own kiddo!

Thanks Jenny. I have been down to Manti and i love it! I can imagine your farmetta. That's to bad about Mick. That would have been a hard adjustment moving from Cali to here. It was a hard adjustment, climate wise, to move from SL to here for me. I froze last winter! I would like some of your tomato plants! I haven't started any yet and tomatoes are my favorite! I don't have email at home yet, so I email at work and the school blocks blog pages. Is there any other way to get your email? I'm interested to talk to you more about your animals too! I want to get a jersey cow bad! I keep telling my husband I want to get animals for our food storage. With all the crap that is starting to go into food these days too, we'd rather raise our own without all the chemicals and stuff. I grew up in the city though, so I have a ton to learn!

My husband and I own 175 acres and he farms another 400 acres. He raises hay and tobacco and we have beef cattle. We bought the farm from his grandmother in 1970 and have lived here ever since. We should have done what you did with your old house, but we didn't. There was an old 2 story house on the farm that his grandmother was living in. She only lived in 2 room, and there was no bathroom. Thank heavens my dad was a carpenter. The first thing he did was enclose a back porch and turn it into a bathroom. From there, we remodeled 1 room at a time, while living in the house. What an adventure. We probably would have been better off to have torn it down and built a new one. But now, I wouldn't take anything for this one. We have raised 3 girls here, numerous horses, cats, dogs, etc. We are now "empty-nesters" (and it's pretty nice)!!! We have 4 grandchildren. I was an elementary teacher for 29 years, but have been retired for 7 years. I take care of ailing parents and inlaws, do some crafts, garden (flowers and vegetables), and do quite a bit of church work. I really enjoy being retired. I am so thankful to have had a job that I enjoyed doing and allowed me to retire early. |

Just email me and we will get you "joined up". We don't have really "regular" times for meetings..just fit them in when we can around everyone's schedule. I am so excited that you want to join us! I used to have a horse,his name was Mick, but he was really old and when we moved here from CAlif I had a friend take him to live with her. He wouldn't have done well on the trip 13 hours..and the climate change for sure after spending all his years at about 75 degrees year round. I miss him alot. I don't have a farm (wish I did) but have a farmette in town (if you have seen Manti you can see why I can do that HERE) with my perfect jersey milk cow, Mona, two Icelandic ewes and a spoiled angora goat and chickens..and one mean rabbit. Well..and cats and dogs and kids.
I sure hope you do start a farmer's market. We could use one in the area for sure. I would love to participate if I can.
Hey..if you need tomato plants this spring and havn't started some yet..I have extras.

Thanks! I'm way excited. It's nice to meet you all. It'll be fun getting to know you. We live on 10 acres and are down to three horses of our own and boarding two others. My husband bought me Dude when we got married. He is 3 years old and tall as the hills! I'm just learning to ride and Dude is 16 hands tall. His name fits him perfect. He's gangly and awkward. My other horse is a two year old and his name is Stone. We end up calling him Stoner. They're a perfect pair.
We bought our property a year and a half ago including a 100 year old house we were going to remodel. We ended up having bats and getting bids of $15,000 to $30,000 to get rid of them. We also found out the house had been on fire and it had structural damage. We ended up tearing it down and starting over. I saved a door and some old bricks though that I want to do something with in the new house. We also saved some foundation stones too that I think I'll make a stair case outside with unless anyone has any other ideas?
My new house has a sun room on it that I'm excited about. One day I want to grow an organic farm and sell the produce locally and maybe start a Farmer's Market down here. That's the plan anyway.
Do any of you gals have horses? What about farms?
Aunt Jenny, I'd love to join the Manti chapter. How do I?
