I am new here. Picked up the "No Place Like Home" issue last week and had a great time reading through it and exploring the website. I had never seen the magazine before and just loved it! I have been a Brooklynite for the last 20 years but grew up in a coal mining town in Northeastern Pennsylvania where backyards were tiny farms and where there was a wonderful mix of immigrants who passed down so much wisdom about gardening, cooking and frugal living - I will never forget them. I will soon be moving out of Brooklyn to a one and one half acre property one hour north of the Big Apple- not exactly rural but enough so that I can put in a sizable garden and maybe chickens??? (Will they wake up the neighbors?) So much to learn. I am a registered dietitian by trade and work for the WIC Program. My passions are weaving, baking and writing short stories. My dream is to one day make some of my living from those passions. And somehow reading the magazine gave me a bit more courage to believe that that could be a possibility. I am really looking forward to being part of the community here at the Farmgirl Connection.

Marie,
Where are you moving in upstate NY? I grew up in Peekskill and have lived in Putnam and Dutchess Counties. I miss it so much. The Hudson Valley and upstate NY are so beautiful, especially farm country. Keep those dreams alive! I too wish to do the things I enjoy and make a living at it rather than sitting at a desk all day.

Hi Marie! I am new here as well but it doesn't take long to enjoy it here. We are practically neighbors as I live between Philadelphia and NY in Doylestown, Pa. I and my family travel into New York all the time. Where are you moving to from Brooklyn? It appears that you are going north which is farther away from my area, but not that far. It sounds great to have the prospect of all that soil to play with not to mention the chickens. Sounds great to me.

Welcome and I look forward to talking with you.

Welcome Marie! Glad you will get to have a bit of earth to play with. We only have a double lot in town, but I love it. We hope to someday have some acreage, cause I want chickens again. Anyway, enjoy the site. It is full of fun and info. See ya around! Simply, Julia
