This is the first time I'm posting here even though I've been around since about last December or so. I was expecting back then. I would come by to check out the chat area off and on before I would go to bed. I had just enough energy left at the end of the day to read posts but not to post more than once or twice. Now I have an almost 5 month old (along with a 4 year old and a 2 year old, all boys). I don't have much more time or even more energy but I figured it was time to introduce myself and say Hi! I've enjoyed reading many of the posts. We don't have a farm but I feel a connection to the earth and all things farm like. We live on 7 acres in upstate NY. We did start a very small garden this year. Two raised beds about 10 x 4. Our gardening didn't do too well this year. My 2 1/2 year old broke his arm first thing this summer on one of the frames of the raised beds. The deer are HORRIBLE up here. They ate everything, except the basil and the tomatoes. What they didn't eat the rabbits finished. They use to come up to our front door and eat the arborvide (don't know if I spelled that correctly) that grew along our front steps! I'm glad we started small this year. Looks like a big fence will be going up next year!...and no broken arms!!!

I found Mary Jane about 4 years ago when I happened upon her second issue at a Barnes and Noble. I've been hooked ever since.

Nice to meet everyone!
Debra

Welcome,Debra. And Julia, I have never heard of putting sticks in the garden for protection. Does that work on rabbits as well or just deer? I will have to give it a try!!!

Hello from the Deep South: I've been reading for the past couple of months but this is my first post here.

I grew up in the country, and my husband and I built 10 years ago on a small plot of land that is a part of the property on which I grew up. Nearby are my parents, who built their dream home several years ago on the "back 10" acres. Also nearby, and also on parts of the old homeplace, are my sister and her family, my brother and his family, and my two sons and their families. My precious grandchildren are within walking distance of all of us. Isn't that great?

We're still in the country, but "civilization" is fast encroaching. (Growing up, my sister and I rode bikes daily in the middle of the road in front of our house. Nowadays, that road is as busy as a freeway.) There's a new subdivision nearby, but thankfully the developers refrained from desecrating the land: they preserved the trees, built lakes, etc.

My husband and I recently retired, and I'm loving it. Having time to spend in my country home again, after working for 25 years, is a joy. Love this website!!!!!

hi debra from the midwest!

what a summer you've had! so incredibly busy-and frustrating to invest all that time and energy into something a wild animal ate up!

this is a great site-i'm glad you're here.

talk to you soon.

Welcome Debra from the Oregon Coast! YOur a busy girl! I too have been fighting the deer, a family of 4. I have tried 3 things that have seemed to help. Two different organic sprays; because of the spray my roses haven't had blackspot. The other is I have put sticks of different heights in my veggie bed and the deer have stayed away. Apparantly, they don't like uneven heights. Even Prince Charles puts sticks in his gardens. It looks a bit quirky, but I am willing to be know as the weird stick lady if it means keeping my veggies for my family. Anyway, glad to have you on board! Simply, Julia

Hi Debra and Welcome (back)! Sounds like you are up to your eyeballs! Your kids are such a nice age now, but they are also very busy so I remember the tired and I only have one!Our garden was less than usual, though the groundhogs and the rabbits ate MORE of it than usual! Nice to have you checking in, hope to hear more from you!

with a happy heart
