Hey y'all  -- I'm new to this site, and though I am in fact a farmgirl at heart, i've kind of gotten lost on my journey to the farm... I've been a "content" city girl for 7 years now (though my friends think my proclivity for needlepoint, cooking and gardening a little odd), then a year ago I met my fiance and slowly things started turning back...
I grew up in Texas and he in Nevada, and though we started our relationship as cityphiles, it soon became apparent that both of us longed to go to the land and make for ourselves a more satisfying, family and land oriented lifestyle. Now we're both stuck in desk jobs that leave us empty at the end of the day. We have decided to move to Texas in a few months and try to start really learning how to live the farm life. I'm an architect and he's an engineer, though, so i feel like we're starting from scratch!!
Does anyone have any suggestions for a new farmgirl trying to start out?

Thanks Girls! One of the main reasons I got on this site is to get confirmation that my dream of a farm life isn't crazy... I'm so excited to get out there and start putting all of the great ideas I'm getting from this site to work!!

Isn't that a commonality? Either your friends get the wish for country, or they think you are nuts. After nearly 15 years I am still hearing it...Why would you want to live OUT THERE??? You SEW? you CAN? It cracks me up personally. I just smile... the contentment I know from a slower lifestyle more than makes up for the wisecracks. They just don't know what they are missing. |

Needlepoint, cooking and gardening are all farmgirl pastimes, no matter where your current residence!
Good luck on your dreams of getting back to the country. I grew up in suburbia, and always wanted the country life. Now I have it...if it makes you feel any better, many of my non-farmgirl friends and family also think I'm a bit 'touched' for wanting this lifestyle and the work that goes along with it. I just smile :)
As Linda says, this site will give you lots of great ideas.

I don't have any suggestion about how to begin, but I do have a warm welcome to you. I am a dislocated farm girl also. I was rasised on a rice farm down in Louisiana and have lived in a city for far too many years.
Read our forums and you will find many women on the farm with wise suggestions.
