Wow what a find!. I was innocently looking to purchase or make rose linen spray and this site came up. I looked at the entry and was immediatedly sucked in. Is it possible to be addicted to something in less than 24 hours? LOL Looking forward to hours of reading and getting to know everyone. Say hey when you have a chance.

You know Jenny in Utah I feel almost the same way when I am in a mountainous area. When traveling through Colorado and Tennessee mountains I felt almost claustophobic; almost panicky because I could not see beyond the mountain. I guess I would like to have some warning what is gonna get me. LOL. I am truly a "Little House on the Prairie" kinda girl. Besides it may be flat, but we can sit and watch the most gorgeous, colorful sunsets and see the first peek of sunrise. So I guess it is good we don't all want to live in the same place, huh? Would be even more crowded than it is in spots.
One of my favorite spots is to travel through the Flint Hills on Interstate 35 between Wichita and Emporia. There is a specific stretch, sort of a valley, that in my minds eye I can see settlers traveling through there by horse and wagon. The thoughts that I have as I gaze upon that vibrant green stretch (in the spring) and the brown dry stretch (come about August) is that they must have thought the the land through there was never ending. I can also almost feel the relentless heat that must have beat down on their heads and shoulders and the skin stinging winds, as they traveled that bone-jarring journey through the washout ruts and the rocks that littered the way. But I also think they saw the majesty of of the unbroken sky, the wild flowers that managed to survive, and the awesome storms that marched across the sky, as well as the breathless sunsets and said it was all worth it.

I think because I have mostly always (except for two years in Minnesota) lived right by the mountains I panic when I am in a place that open..I guess that is it..no place to hide. I have met people who move here though, and say the mountains seem big and looming and scary to them..when to me they are comforting and feel safe..funny how it realy depends on what you are used to.

Hi Dorothy! My husband and I passed through Kansas on our way from California to Wisconsin. We were driving through when an electrical storm was passing over - very very scary! We should have known something was up when we were just about the ONLY people on the road. The skies were practically black and it was the middle of the day. And lightening streaks were coming down around us, touching the ground. YIKES!!!

yes they were all north and west of us. The lightenung was incredible! Scared the daylights our of me since we were out in it. Once we got home, I was out on the patio grilling dinner and we noticed the clouds above us and slightly to the east rotating, but still loosely formed. Not anything I think you could formally call a tornado, but the rotation was there. Heard the next day that there was tornado that never touched ground over Haysville. We were betting that is what they were seeing.

I remember those tornadoes! They really hit your area hard! You all seem to get hammered down that way... Did you have any bad weather last weekend? Wichita had some bad storms. Kansas does have interesting and wild extremes. One month we are parched for rain, the next month it is flooding! I really get tired of this climate.

Wow thanks for the warm, warm welcome! I am looking forward to exploring the site and gaining wisdom from all of you.
To answer one of the obvious questions, yes I've been asked if I have been able to find the yellow brick road, where's Toto (thought about naming a dog Toto), where's the munchkins, and just to get one up everyone, was going to buy a personalized car tag with "off2cwzd" (off to see the wizard).  Hey we even had a tornado last weekend., although the f4 in 1991 (that we stood and watched go past), passed within 1/2 mile and the one in 1999 passed 3 blocks from us. Too close for comfort. But, I love the wild weather extremes in Kansas.
Will enjoy hearing from those of you lucky enough to live on a farm...especially those in Kansas, and hear what interests you all have.
