Posted - May 15 2007 : 11:28:09 AM Ok, so I hope I'm doing this right--I've done a decent amount online, but never been active in a real forum...
I'm new here, and relatively new at my location in rural New York (Otsego County). We live on a 98+ acre farm-ish chunk of land, have Barred Rock hens, a rescued mutt, Jacob Sheep arriving in about a week, and 25 chicks (mixed)arriving shortly after the sheep. The land is covered with apple trees (last year I went nuts making pie filling for everyone, and applesauce for a few).
We've had and butchered our own pig, took a deer last year and I'm currently listening to my Dandelion Jelly jars seal up--I hope they set up! The land's not good up here for much of anything -- we joke that our main crops include rocks and milkweed--both prolific and pretty useless right now. Dandelions went crazy this year so we tried to take advantage of them with wine, fritters and jelly.
We're trying to live more consciously. When I'm not caring for my son or making food for my husband I'm gardening, doing my art and writing and trying to wrap my mind around the cancer that's destroying my mother. I'm keeping busy at a nearly frantic pace... Spring keeps me hopping!
I'd love to know who else is around here and what they do--happy to meet you all! Shannon

Posted - May 18 2007 : 4:03:14 PM Amie, Victor is probably 25 minutes out on 490. Have you not experienced Eastview? i am not a mall person but Eastview is so open and has lovely stores. Well worth the drive! I actually went to MJ's website I think and found June who heads up the local chapter. You can e-mail me "through the back door" and let me know your e-mail address and I will make sure she contacts you. She is an awesome apron designer and had some of her creations featured in Mj's book and magazine. Perhaps we could get together for tea? Bonnie, what do you think? HAPPY FRIDAY!!(sorry I was 'shouting'!) Angie.

Posted - May 18 2007 : 06:05:31 AM Sorry, didn't mean to make you guess about my location. I work in downtown Rochester, but I live a bit further north in the Maplewood neighborhood. The waterfall I was referring to is the Lower Falls at the Driving Park Bridge, across from the Rose Garden. I get the impression that most people who live in the burbs around Rochester fear and loathe the city, so I've given up expecting people to recognize any of my local landmarks. Now that you mention it, I think I was aware that there's a chapter in Victor. Victor seems terribly far away from me, although I suppose technically it is about the same distance as Avon or Caledonia. In other respects, though, it's a whole different world. Who here belongs to the Victor chapter? |

I don't work full-time!!! Seriously, I do most of my stuff on weekends or holidays (I work at the school). In the evening I can do some embroidery, but I can't think straight enough to sew or quilt usually!!

Posted - May 17 2007 : 07:54:49 AM Angie- I'm not sure whether Conesus or Canandaigua lake is closest to me. But Lake Ontario is what I'm really close to at the moment. I also live just a short walk from one of the large waterfalls on the Genesee River. That's pretty cool. |

Posted - May 16 2007 : 11:19:34 AM Welcome, Shannon. I too am new to this - just joined this past spring and have had a ball reading and learning from all the different forum topics. I'm also new to the farmgirl life style - my husband & I just moved into our dream home on top of a ridge in the Black HIlls of S.D. So I'm learning how to grow things in rock, how to landscape in rock, and you know what I'm talking about it seems. Again, welcome and enjoy all the wonderful ladies here. You'll learn a lot from them. You and your mother will be in my prayers.

Posted - May 16 2007 : 07:34:11 AM Hello, Shannon. Always glad to see another New Yorker. I'm living in the city, unfortunately, but I have a small garden and I'm learning to bake, can, and sew. Slowly but surely. I'm hoping to move to the country before too many more years pass, so I'm interested in checking out all parts of New York. Sorry to hear about your mom's illness. Hope you enjoy reading and posting here. |
