Good morning everyone, It's great to come and read all the great posts from you. I was encouraged on another post to start a new thread here and introduce myself so here goes!

I'm from Oregon, though I was born in California and have moved a good bit in my time. I just moved back home after living in Vermont for quite a few years and I'm just really missing the atmosphere over there. I live in town - which drives me insane - but someday I hope very much to have my own place with some room to breathe. It's been just my two kids and I for a while, and now I've "inherited" my nephew as well, and happy to do so. This all makes me REALLY crave the space of farmland. Some place with huge douglas fir trees, a little creek running through, and enough space to be self-sufficient during growing seasons.

I've had my MaryJane's book for quite a while now, mostly using it like a cookbook, or craft idea book. I just finally started reading the darn thing here very recently and discovered the website. The rest is pretty much just posting here and sending in for my farmgirl starter kit.

I've enjoyed reading about you all, it's wonderful to come in and see so many other people with the same heart-goals. I'm not insane for wanting to grow things and sew things and teach my daughter how to make things from scratch! :)

Hi Terisa,

I saw your post on "farm stalking" and wanted to welcome you to the forum. I will send you all my positive thoughts and light a candle (right now!) that if it's for the best, it will be. I'm very sentimental about land and homesteads too, and I'm a foothill girl myself.

Welcome to the forum. So glad you joined us. I'd love to learn to make soap too, but love buying it from the ladies on the forum too!

Hello Terisa!

Welcome! We're not far from one another. I'm in Molalla. I'm trying to put together a Farm Girl get together at my place on May 26th so I'll have to send you a message with the details.

I've made milk based soaps using the milk from our dairy cow. I just use lye rather than try to make my own. I've read up on how to do it but it sounds very labor intensive.

Welcome to group! Maybe we can get together sometime as we're not too far from one another.

Terisa-

Check your local grocery stores and hardware stores in the bathroom aisle. Red Devil Lye is 100% lye. Our local grocery store stopped carrying Red Devil, but our hardware store (a Do-It-Best) carries a brand that isn't Red Devil, but is still 100% lye. Just read the label and make sure it says 100% lye and it is okay. Otherwise there are several places you can order Lye off of the internet as well.

Soap making is awesome! I absolutely love it whenever I have a chance to make it. I like to make hot process soap in my crock pot but cold process is great fun as well. There are tons of us soap makers her on the MJF forums who love to chat about soap! What "clean" fun!

It would be wonderful if that would happen. My mother lives out in the country and her neighbors just sold their land... to developers! Splitting a perfect, beautiful farm that borders a river, up into 3 little ready-made homes with not enough for any of them to farm! Talk about heart-breaking! I took my little ones over there yesterday while the ancient fir trees are still there to love. It's a beautiful place but some day I have to believe it will work out and I'll have one of my own.

On another note: I'm going to searching a bit around here for a way to make soap. Lye is SO hard to get, and though I have the information from my grandmother on how to make your own lye I just cannot bring myself to do it. I keep thinking what if one of the little one's got into that cask and got it on their skin? I'm not THAT country I guess haha. If you know of a direction to point me for crafting natural hand-made soap give me a boot to face the right way please!

It was very nice to hear from you all, thank you so much for welcoming me and making me feel so at home here.

MM/MP/MMA,
Terisa.

Terisa-

So glad that you are joining us. No- You are not insane for wanting to grow things or teach your daughter how to make things from scratch. :) But even if you were, you are at least in good company here on the forums! I hope you find your country farm soon! If all of us Farmgirls keep buying up the farmland, someday we are going to own it all. Wouldn’t that be great? ;)
