Wow! Just wanted to let you all know, we had our first official chapter meeting today at a local quilt shop! We had put up flyiers, and had heard from a few gals, but wasn't sure who or how many would actually show up! So when twenty (20) yes (20) showed up, it was wonderful! We had alot of different ideas on things we could share, things we could do, and just a getting to know each other. We had some goodies, show and tell, and actually decided to do a charity thing right off. I asked everyone if they knew of someone in need, and we did have one of the girls with a friend who is recovering from breast cancer, and just found out it has spread to her lungs and brain. So we all decided to make her a quilt. We are each making a nine inch finished block in fall colors with cats and dogs! That's the love of her life. Then we'll put it together and quilt it! Our gift to her and her family. I was so touched that we could do this on our first gathering. We have a wide variety of talents in this group. Beaders, sewers, quilters, hand work, embroidery, some who came just to join in on the friendships. Seems a real need in our little town! I am just so excited! We plan to meet once a month, and spend time together, and share recipes, and join in on outside ventures. Some of us are attending a quilt show this weekend! Thanks to all of you for your support, and ideas to get this all going! I am having a wonderful time! Thank you MaryJane for getting all this started, and sharing it with the world. We are all not far from each other, and that feels real good!

Peace to everyone out there, and we'll be in touch. Thank you to Nancy Jo for always checking in on me and our new group! She is a treasure to all of us. Love, hugs to all my dear girfriends!

Oh Gloria,
Wish I was there to join - I miss my craft group since I moved - haven't been able to find gals here that I click with.
Best wishes and great fun to you all,
Jayne

Yes Jayne, there were alot of different conversations going on, but we introduced ourselves, told a little about what we do, and each person got to talk! We're going to meet once a month, I put up flyers, and had about 10 or so respond, but a total of 20 counting me. I even met another gal at a quilt show on Friday, and she will join us in October. I talk it up! I'm not bashful and just invite everyone I talk to. Yes Margie, some quilt guilds seem a little stuffey, but there are gals out there that don't want all the structure. And this way, they can do what ever their little heart desires. I got tired of doing the same thing over and over at a guild, and I think you can learn so much from other people that I really enjoy this.

I have been so excited about it all I can hardly stand it. My son was here this weekend, and I even show him the new magazine and he thought it was "cool"!

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted. I think some with come, and some will go, but we'll have a good time doing it all. We have a rug hooking demo coming up from one of the girls, we'll do redwork, crochet, quilting, beading, rug making (braiding) and locker hooking which is really fun. So I think we could do something different almost every month for some time! And then everyone get to share in the (sharing) part of this!

love, hugs, and strawberries to you all, wish you were here to join in!

Hi Gloria... This sounds wonderful, and 20 people to a first meeting wow..that is great....I wish I could find something like that here or even get one started...I have been to a few Quilt Guilds, but they were already well established and did not "cotton" to newcomers very well....so I am still looking around....Lots of sucess to your group......

Hi Gloria,
When are you all meeting again? Please keep us posted with what your group is up to - it sounds like such fun. I bet you couldn't even keep up with all the conversations flying around!!
Best wishes,
Jayne

Thank you Frannie, yes, I can hardly believe it! You said it, women need/crave women friends. We learn so much, and we're there for each other! And yes, I can only do things that I can truly share - like the lady with breast cancer. Again, we may need something at some time in our life, and I feel it's what I'm suppose to do! I am very blessed, and have always felt a need to share. And it's so much fun when you do it together!!!! Sounds like you have had some very large groups! Where did you meet with that many people? Right now, at this little quilt shop - it is packed. So if we continue to grow, we'll need a bigger place to gather!

gloria .. that is wonderful! i am a big believer in "build it .. and they will come" ... when i started tea parties years ago .. we invited ten guests .. who by the next party had invited ten guest .. and it kept snowballing and we had a very successful business going .. and the concept behind our tea parties was a place where women could come and 'leave the bills, babies and bosses behind' .. a time just for them. it was (and is) such a need these days where women are so busy caretaking others.

about a year later when i started the Crooked Tree Hollow Doll Club .. i had lots of women to invite .. and we started with FIFTY members .. which expanded to over a hundred (some were long distance members who came for weekend classes .. got our newsletter and participated in our doll challenges.

Women need Women Friends. AND i am so happy that you are all choosing to make 'charity' a part of your club. We who are blessed need to remember those who are going through sad times .. for our time may come in this lifetime too .. and it is a good feeling to know so many people care for us.

keep reporting on all the doings and fun! xoxo

Yes Libbie, it was great! I smiled so much my face hurt! We had a wonderful time, shared alot, and just didn't have enough time and space. But I think we will have a great turn out, and we'll all learn some new things - and purchase and barter some. It's had to believe just how talented people are! It is always amazing, and that they are so ready to share it with you! Anyway, I hope when the quilt is all said/done/and a picture is taken - that I will be able to get it posted! I look forward to sharing it all with this group as well. Farmgirls rule!!!!!!!

love, hugs and strawberries to you all! Get out there and just do it!

Gloria - that sounds like such a great time - TWENTY FARMGIRLS?!?!?!? How much more fun could it be! Again - you farmgirls that combine get-togethers with charity are great! I can't wait to see the quilt. I'll bet it will be just gorgeous and SO unique! What a kind idea.

I agree - farmgirls are really something special - what a treasure to be part of it all!

XOXO, Libbie

Thanks girls! Yes, I think this shows just how much everyone wants to get to know someone, and share, and be close, have companionship, and learn new ideas. We may not continue to meet at the quilt shop, they don't have that much room. We shall see.

Nancy Jo, the quilt show I speak of is a local quilt show, Golden Needles Quilt Guild, held in a big convention center. They will have vendors, so yes, we can purchase quilting needs if we want. They have demonstrations of things you would like to learn - (free), and they will have quilts hung for viewing. It helps raise money for the guild to do things during the year! It will be fun. I will have a few quilts I quilted for people there.

Yep, I think this was really cool, cool, cool, too! We were really only expecting 10 or 12, but oh so pleased when we had so many. I'm not real computer literate, but when we get our charity quilt put together, I will take a picture and try to post. Nancy Jo, each person will make their own block, any way they want, pieced, appliqued, just a signature block with writing on it, and with fabrics with cats and dogs. Apparently she was a dog trainer, and handler. I think it will be special.

Thanks girls for all your support, I couldn't do it all without you! This group is awesome!!!!!!

And yes, I think if any of us lived near each other - well watch out - we'd be so busy, we wouldn't want to ever do anything else!

Cool, cool, cool! What a great idea to put up flyers. As soon as things calm down a bit at home, I really need to get crack-a-lackin' and get some gals together. Gloria- you make me tired just reading about all you do!

Good on all of you down there in Texas! Wow -- twenty at the first meeting. Very impressive . . . and I think it does reveal that we all are craving friendship and community . . . how lovely to be able to reach out and find each other either via the forum or via a FarmGirl group.

Berries, this is so exciting! I wish I could come. How fun to be with a group like that with like interests,Sure would like to see that quilt you are all putting together, where do the cats and dogs come from? Kind of like a redwork? Boy if you got twenty at the first meeting this thing could get BIG. Will the meetings always be in the quilt shop?
Have fun at the up comming quilt show, where is it? Bet you come home with lots of new ideas, can you buy material and all things per quilting there or is it all display? Well all I know is I wish I could be going to these meetings, so proud of you for starting this up in your area!
Thankyou for all the kind words.

Hi Jayne, Actually, I sleep very little - thyroid thing! But I always have alot to do, and seems the more I have, the more I get done! I have been doing this for over seven years now, seven days a week! We haven't taken a vacation since 1992. We just love our home/mini farm, and we both love what we do! My husband is a naturalist working at a City of Houston Park, and I work at home! Having started this group will allow me to get out and have a special day with the girls and do something special! But I love every single day!

I was really surprised at how many showed up! But everyone had something to offer! I'm just so excited about it all I can hardly stand it. It's 11:30p.m. here and just came over to the house. I have a separate building for a quilting studio, and after supper usually do some things to finish out the day!

Wish you were here, we'd make a quilt tonight!

Gloria,
Wow - sounds fantastic! How on earth do you find time to do everything - do you ever sleep?!
Best wishes,
Jayne
