Hi everyone!

The Urban Farmgirls are meeting again on Tuesday the 12th at a downtown coffeehouse in the community room and we need something to do at our meeting. We won't always meet "off-site" like this, but this time it just didn't work out for anyone to host at a home. Being in a coffeehouse has its advantages (mochas!), but it also makes the crafting or "doing" part of the meeting a little hard.

So here's what I'm looking for:

* craft ideas that are
quick (one hour or less)
easy
economical (something that uses found objects or inexpensive materials? I'm likely going to be stuck with gathering the supplies at this late date!)
adorable, fun, quirky, etc.

The theme of our meeting is "Harvest Recipe Swap" and we're doing a potluck (already got approval from the coffeehouse!) of dishes with seasonal fare (apples, squash, etc.) with recipe cards to share with everyone. So the food's taken care of. Then we'll have the usual socializing and just having a good time, but we all said that we wanted to "DO" something at each meeting.

So...what should we "DO?" (I asked the girls on the Evite, but have only received a few responses to that question...)

(We're also planning to bring non-perishable items to donate to a Food Shelf together - that will most likely be a part of each meeting...)

Thanks in advance for your great ideas!

Catherine

Since you are doing a Harvest type theme, you could make corn dollies.....that is always fun.

what you must see."

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

In the past I have cut them a week or so before we are going to do this and just hung them to dry on my pot rack. That way they are still "fresh" but don't have enough moisture to go moldy. Hope that helps!

quick question, for the spice bundles...do you use fresh or dried herbs?

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.

great idea, Jenny, about the soup mixes. I was trying to come up with something for our first meeting in NH this month and that sounds great!

Ooh, more good ideas! Thanks, thanks...this is just what I needed to get us moving. I've talked to my two planning cohorts and they agree that the soup thing is awesome. We're going to call it "Stone Soup" and have everyone bring an ingredient and their own container. Then we'll put together our dried soup mixes either from a great recipe that I just found online or from whatever suits each farmgirl's fancy that night. Fun!!

I will be sure to share photos of our soup-making adventures.

And if anyone has more quick craft ideas, keep 'em comin'! I am saving all of these great ideas for future meetings...and just for me!

(Erin, we're doing cards for our November meeting, so thanks for the tips! Everyone wants to make holiday cards together, should be fun!)

I love Jenny's idea and Blue wren's too!
We have these "hen party" nights and do similar stuff. Recently we did a Family Recipe scrapbook page (I did my Mom's Peanut Butter Eggs
for Easter) and then you can color zerox and send to family members.
It started a trend in my family and everyone started sharing recipes that we loved but forgot who "started" them.
Another idea that is seasonal and in the cooking theme is making
"bouquet garni" with all the seasonal herbs you are going to be salvaging soon before frost. Just get some clean muslin or cheesecloth cut in circles (large coffee can lid) and fill with herbs and seasonings and tie with cotton twine (I think we used natural embroidery floss). Throw one in a soup/stock pot, or open and use as seasonings for pork roast, etc... Easy, useful and inexpensive!
Along those same lines you can make dip packets with snack size ziplock bags: French Onion, Fiesta (spicy), Pretzel mix, etc...
and staple a colorful card to the top with recipe/serving suggestions.
Easy, breezy and no preservatives like the stuff from the market!
Have a great meeting!

with a happy heart

The soup mix idea is hard to beat!

I also tried to think of something that wasn't too messy or involved and other than decorating small wooden boxes (from the craft store) to use as recipe boxes, I had a hard time coming up with ideas.

Who knew that "Fall Harvest" would be such a hard craft theme?

What about simple herb/spice sachets, hand sewn using felt squares? Decorate with some simple lace or ribbons. Using herbs like lavender or spices like cinnamon sticks and cloves might work.

Making greeting cards/note cards using pressed flowers? The cards can be precut from cardstock. I buy the 50 cent packs of notecards from Michaels for the envelopes... but if you have time beforehand, there are patterns online for making envelopes from scratch using a variety of papers - wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, paper grocery bags... You could prep some beforehand and just bring scissors and glue sticks for finishing them off. The cards don't have to be decorated with pressed flowers, but can be decorated with rubber stamps or even scraps of paper. If someone has any calligraphy skill, then a simple name or initials might work. (The pressed flower idea is more in line with your theme though.)

Catherine,
Glad Jenny's idea will work for you. I was awake during the night, so was giving some thought to your craft idea and didn't come up with anything that I thought would work at the coffee shop in a short period of time. So good idea Jenny!!

What about making jar mixes for bean soup? You would need quart jars, about 8 to 10 kinds of beans or things like split peas and like that (lentils are good too) to put in and you put layers of each type in each jar and have little spice bundles (in cheesecloth tied with jute) to tie around the jar top. seems harvesty. But..maybe too much stuff to spread out and make.....? I don't know. You could have a cute tag for each made up ahead.
