Posted - Nov 29 2010 : 07:10:39 AM Good morning! Do you go by Paet or Mandy? Cleveland is indeed interesting. I'm still getting used to it since moving here over the summer from Arizona. It's drastically different from there! Have you always lived in the area?
Countryside Conservancy hosts several winter farmers markets. I like them as they offer classes in beginning your own farm, organic/vegan cooking, etc. My husband worked for a farmer who sold his organic produce there and the prices seemed pretty fair. Westside Market is fantastic!
I'm planning on going to a meeting by the Extension Services about setting up community gardens and urban agriculture/market gardening. My husband and I are hoping to get involved with sustainable agriculture (and chickens!) here as soon as we can. There seems to be a lot of interest and a growing awareness about the importance of local food and such here.
Wow- an 1890 home! I bet it's lovely. I understand about making do with the kitchen- I love to cook but for now am making do with a tiny kitchen space. It's better than nothing but requires some creative thinking!
That's great you're doing homemade gifts. How are you making socks? I'm still trying to decide what exactly to make everyone and need to do so soon! For the last couple years I made baked goods, homemade bath soaks, scrubs.
I too hope there are more farmgirls out there! I'll let you know if I hear from more women.
Glad you had a good Thanksgiving! Talk to you more soon.

Posted - Nov 26 2010 : 08:36:03 AM Hi Rue,
I do hope that there are more of us out there in the ethers! Cleveland is an odd city..........
Where will you find a farmers market in December????? I thought they all closed by late Oct. or early Nov.
I did go to farmers markets a couple of years ago and got some good bargans but didn't go to any this year. Looked at oneand the prices were way too high! I know, being organic takes more time and etc. so it is more expensive.
We have a community garden - in fact two - near where I live. I helped set one up but opted out of having a plot so that those who needed it more could have my plot.
Also a couple of years ago DH and I bought produce every other week from organic gardens.
Mostly, we do our shopping at the WestSide Market - there is one stand near the back parking lot that is totally organic and the prices and produce are great!
I love cooking but need to get my kitchen set up better - have no work space per se. We live in a house built in 1890 and what was the pantry has been turned into the kitchen.... have to fix that and then I really can cook!
Hope you had a nice thanksgiving. We opted out of the home cooked meal and went to a favorite family restaurant near us - we are all family there!and DH and I and three friends had a geat home cooked meal with leftovers to take home, It was nice.
Have to get going on the Christmas gifts I will be making! Everything, for the most part home made. Socks and clothing! Also maybe will make some cookies this year - haven't made any in years but do miss making them.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Posted - Nov 24 2010 : 07:47:44 AM Good morning! It sounds like we share similar interests! I'm a bookworm, and am planning to get back into book selling soon. I love to cook, though I'm still learning! Do you go to any of the farmers markets around here? I'm hoping to see how many Farmgirls are in our area and perhaps have us get together to meet at a market next month. Have a lovely Thanksgiving! Talk to you more soon. Rue |

Posted - Nov 23 2010 : 10:22:13 AM Hi RueAnn,
I too live on the west side of Cleveland. I just discovered this magazine and find it pretty interesting. I am a textile artist and am currently doing art quilts and embroidery. I enjoy reading, cooking, nature, gardening - though we don't get enough sun in our yard to get many vegetables growing. I'm also into history and have an interest in America from it's founding through the Civil War. I hope to hear from you soon. Have a nice Thanksgiving Day!
