Save Our Seeds – Feed Our Future
Welcome to MJ’s Heirloom Mavens!
Maybe it’s the weather (freezing here). Maybe it’s the time of year (after the holidays, before gardening season gets in high gear). Maybe it’s my age (50-cough-cough-cough – I’m okay). Usually when I get ready to write a few lines to you there’s something on my heart that I want to share. This week, there isn’t anything special. I’ve just been sitting here thinking about what to write and smiling. No words come to mind. There’s just a wonderful warmth and coziness that envelopes and I find myself just sitting here smiling. Whether I’m chatting away on the DOE or whether I’m offline working on other projects, you are with me. And that puts a smile on my face. Maybe it’s because we’ve been blessed with more sisters in the last few weeks that warms the cockles of my heart. It doesn’t really matter why. It just is what it is. And what it is……….is wonderful.
**** MAVEN TO MAVEN ****
In the Life of a Maven Corinne (corinnelouise) and hubby are still waiting for an official move date.
Lora (FARMALLchick) had quite a week. On Monday she dislocated her jaw, Tuesday she posted about her new etsy store ( www.CountryFriedAcres.etsy.com ), and thanks to another storm coming through the area, on Wednesday took a tumble on her driveway. “Landed on my elbow hip and somehow my shin. Haven't figured that out yet.”
From Ruth (homemom), recipient of the first MJ’s Heirloom Maven scholarship: “OMG! Mavens~You are the best!!! I just received an email from Brian at MJF. I am just tearing up here at your sweetness!! Thank you so much for the sisterhood membership. You are the best!!! I don't even have words to express how thankful I am. You have all blessed me so much since I have joined this group. I am always learning from you. It has been such a blessing getting to know each and everyone of you!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
New Mavens And the mavens just keep on comin’! WOO HOO! We are excited to welcome Diana (gramadinah) and Julie (ClaireSky) as our two newest mavens. We look forward to getting to know you better as we spread the word: “Save our seeds – Feed our future.”
Now is a great time for those of you who have been thinking about checking out the mavens. Lots of gardening talk, good info and good company awaits. If you are not in the sisterhood yet, come anyway. In these economic times we realize that not everyone has the resources to join the sisterhood so we have created a companion thread, the HHM/HM Henhouse Connection http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556&whichpage=1 . This way you can read the posts in the henhouse and post on the connection. For those already in the sisterhood, just send Gabe an e-mail at gabe@maryjanesfarm.com to be added to the henhouse. For those not in the sisterhood and are just waiting for a reason to join, this is it! And remember, if you want more information about MJ’s Heirloom Mavens, check out the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=667 and then go to Magazine: Call for Entries / Keeping in Touch / Danger of Extinction Thread and introduce yourself. We’d love to get to know you!
**** WEEKLY UPDATE ****
Seed-Swapping List It’s time to firm up those seeds lists and send them to Marcy (Marcy Jo). She’s asked that we send her our lists, even if they aren’t complete (we can finalize them later) so she doesn’t get swamped with them all at once and get behind.
From Amy Grace (graciegreeneyes): “One of my regular customers ordered heirloom seeds this week and was warned - online - to order early, they are expecting record demand due to the economy and resulting surge of DIY-ers. Good news in the long run, but y'all might want to get your orders in.”
If you’re interested in trying a new variety of lettuce, Lillian (Ms. Lilly) recommends the following: Forellenschuss, Yougoslavian Red, Oak Leaf and Mascara.
Some of us have had our mailboxes filled with seed catalogs, others, well, we’re still waiting. Most of us are familiar with Seed Savers, Bakers Creek, Bountiful Gardens and Seeds of Change. Some others mentioned on the DOE this week that you may want to check out are Abundant Life Seeds, John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds, Raintree Nurseries, Fedco Seed catalog. And, of course, heirlooms doesn’t pertain only to seeds. Contact Dawn (deeredawn) at Meyer Hatcheries to request their chicken catalog - 888 568..9755. It will make her day!
Looking for some new gardening ideas? Alee (Alee) came up with a winner: “I am going to start sprouting seeds and I might even grow some tomatoes and potatoes inside in re purposed garbage cans(bought new of course cause using old garbage cans to grow food makes me shudder)! Since I will be Doubling the space that I have to use I think I can get away with more plants!” For details, go to www.weidners.com/spud_Barrel.htm . Thanks for the tip, Alee!
HMBC (Heirloom Maven Book Club) We’re just past the halfway point in the month. How are you doing with this month’s selection, “Gardening with Heirloom Seeds” by Lynn Coulter? Post your thoughts, comments and questions in the henhouse http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=710 or, if you are not in the sisterhood yet, use the HM/HHM Discussion Thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556&whichpage=1 . Also, be sure to check out the author’s website, www.lynncoulter.com .
Our previous – and first – book club selection was “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. Many of us have posted about how it has changed our thinking regarding the food we eat. Ruth shared this experience with on Monday: “Thanks to the AVM book and Barbara Kingslover this week our local grocery store had imported cherries on sale. I absolutely love cherries but because they weren't local I didn't buy any. I will wait until they're in season. I also found a farmer's market that is indoors and open year round on Saturdays. I hope to make it there next Saturday.” Good job, Ruth! Making changes like this aren’t easy but it’s so rewarding to know you’re making a difference, isn’t it?
