THE MAVENS’ HAVEN
November 29, 2008

Welcome to MJ’s Heirloom Mavens!

"Now, therefore, I .... do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may be then, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the universe.” With those words, Abraham Lincoln made official the first Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. Thanks to Lillian for posting the original proclamation on the DOE ( http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=176 ). It is truly an heirloom.

This was a week of sharing of traditions for the mavens., from sharing kinds of stuffing and pies to “how do you spend the day after Thanksgiving?” What was shared the most this week, though, was love. Here are a few quotes:

“I have a lot to be thankful for this year, so much to even mention here, but I do want all of you, Dawn, Karen, Annika, Ruth, Brenda, Denise, Alee, Rene', Marcy, Tina, Amy Grace, Lillian, Corinne, & Lora, dear, dear Mavens, to know how thankful I am to have you in my life at this time. Y'all have become part of something so very important, a life's work, to me. May you and yours be blessed. Happy Thanksgiving.” Teresa Sue (Contrary Wife)

“I must agree you Mavens have actually become a part of my life, not just some people I know from the internet. When I talk about you it usually starts out "my friend from......." Thank All of You for being here- You are the BEST!” Lillian (Ms. Lilly)

“"Thank you all for the wonderful way you have engaged in the discussion and the vision of the Maven's. I have "met" some of the most incredible women, the lengths of the talent, and the heart and the willingness to serve one another is most days overwhelming.........May your day be everything you dream it of being!” Rene (prosserfarmgirl)

“I am thankful for the community that we have created here and the energy that each of you brings to this forum. It has been a joy to get to know all of you this fall and I look forward to hearing more from each of you. I love that everyone's individual voice blends so well to create something more.” Amy Grace (graciegreeneyes)

So with gratitude in our hearts, a twinkle in our eyes, and spreading true farmgirl spirit along the way, here’s to plowing through the holiday season 2008!

**** MAVEN TO MAVEN ****

Mavens on the Road
Corinne is safe and sound with her family in France. It was a longer trip than expected (10 hours longer!) but she’s there and still keeping in touch with the mavens, for which we’re all grateful. She’s still waiting on news about their move.

New Mavens
We have a new maven! Her name is Susan (at least that’s what Dawn remembers – the info is on her dying computer). If you’re reading this, Susan, please jump in on the DOE (Danger of Extinction) thread and/or henhouse so we can get to know you. And please accept our apologies if we have your name wrong. It’s not the first (or last) time we be wrong about anything, but we have good hearts and we have a lot of fun!

Are you someone who’s reading the maven posts but unsure about jumping in? Does this newsletter rev up your interest? If you want more information about MJ’s Heirloom Mavens, check out the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=667 and then go to Magazine: Call for Entries / Keeping in Touch / Danger of Extinction Thread and introduce yourself. We’d love to get to know you!

**** WEEKLY UPDATE ****

Silver or Gold?
Dawn would like to know everyone’s favorite color and whether they prefer silver or gold. It’s a little surprise sumpin-sumpin that she has in the works for everyone. If you haven’t posted your favorites on the DOE yet, please do so this week. Without her computer, she’s needing something to keep her busy. It is dying a slow painful death. There was a brief flicker of life on Friday when she surprised us with a post. (We needed that because we miss our QMD – )

Seed Saving Information:
Tina found a great article isolation and cross-pollination of heirlooms. It’s posted on the DOE http://www.maryjanesfarm.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=173

Lillian discovered a great new website, High Mowing Seeds (Family Owned Since 1996). They have a Community Supported Seeds program, similar to a CSA (CS Agriculture) but with organic and heirloom seeds. Through December 31, 2008, you can purchase “seeds credit” to redeem for purchases in 2009 and receive 10% off the total purchase. Check them out at http://www.highmowingseeds.com Here is a quote from the founder (sounds like he would fit right in with the mavens):
"Tom Stearns loves seeds. When asked what it is about seeds that makes him so passionate, he replies, “I see seeds as one of the best educational tools. For me, I’ve seen myself as an educator more than anything else. I see my work focusing on helping people rebuild their local food systems. Seeds are an important, yet easy tool to recognize the importance of these systems, and seeds are one of the mediums by which this message can be
conveyed.” Livin’ Magazine MAY | JUNE 2008 - by Cheryl Bruce

If you would like some bittersweet seeds from Harvest Thyme Farms, please post your request on the DOE. Dawn has LOTS available her plants at home. They are invasive so keep that in mind but they are so pretty in the fall. Dawn has all requests placed before Saturday, November 29.

It’s Maven Christmas Time!
The time is here to send those maven gifties! Let the fun begin!!!

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
This week on the HMBC: Chapters 15 and – “Where Fish Wear Crowns: September” and “Smashing Pumpkins: October.” For those who haven’t read ahead, it’s worth a peek at the last two chapters to read about the authors attempts as repopulating her turkeys from her current flock. It will give you a new respect for the breed and the breeders – and might possibly make you cry at the beauty of letting nature take its course. Remember you can follow the discussion at http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=597 in the henhouse or in the HHM/HM Henhouse Connection thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556
Also this book is one of the requirements for the Farm Kitchen “Know Your Food” Beginner Level badge. See the Teresa Sue’s “Badge Alert!!!!” post for more info: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1

**** REMINDERS ****

American Farmland Trust – www.farmland.org – still needs your vote. Please support them by letting them know your priorities so that America’s farm and ranch lands can be preserved.

Monday Maven Madness: If you have trouble remembering the when the chatting begins, follow Dawn’s example and set an alarm! Then join us for at 9pm EST, 6pm PST, every Monday evening.

Here’s where you can find information on badges the mavens are currently working toward:
Beginner Farm Kitchen Badge: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1
Beginner Farmgirl Gratitude Badge: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=637

***Note from Karen: Thanksgiving Day began my first gratitude journal entry. It’s not too late to join me if you weren’t able to participate in the first round of working toward the Farmgirl Gratitude Badge. At a time when we’re surrounded by advertisements to buy, buy, buy, I’m finding it nice to refocus and be grateful for what I already have, have, have in abundance.

Remember to check out Our Mother Hen’s nest box in the henhouse where she will be laying her eggs filled with gardening tips, tidbits and treasures. It’s labeled as the bulletin board, but Nest Box is much more mavenly, dontcha think? http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=169
