THE MAVENS’ HAVEN
November 15, 2008

Welcome to MJ’s Heirloom Mavens!

“There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” Dorothy Gale, The Wizard of Oz [spoken with eyes closed and clicking together the heels of her ruby slippers]
“Ain’t it the truth? Ain't it the truth?” The Cowardly Lion, The Wizard of Oz [tugging on tail and smiling]

Okay, maybe that wasn’t the lion’s response to Dorothy in the movie but it’s mine. There’s nothing like a lot of traveling in a month to make a person appreciate being home. One of the things I missed the most was sleeping in our own bed. It doesn’t matter how homey and cozy someone tries to make your stay, although the effort is greatly appreciated and helps ease the journey, there’s still no place like home. I think it’s because it goes beyond the surroundings. It isn’t the physical structure and routine. It’s the familiarity and the memories that are created there. It’s the love that you feel when you walk in the door, left from the good times shared with those you love, family and friends. It doesn’t matter if you share your house with others or live alone. It doesn’t matter if you’ve lived there for 50 years or five days. It’s home because it’s where you live your life. Even if it fits like a new pair of shoes or a pair that needs to be resoled, it’s home. And home is where the heart is.

**** MAVEN TO MAVEN ****

Mavens on the Road
Lora’s back on the road this weekend but what an adventure this trip is going to be. She’s visiting our QMD so you know there will be some stories to be shared when the weekend is over! Have a safe trip, Lora, and give many hugs to Dawn for us.

New Mavens
Are you someone who’s reading the maven posts but unsure about jumping in? Does this newsletter rev up your interest? If you want more information about MJ’s Heirloom Mavens, check out the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=667 and then go to Magazine: Call for Entries / Keeping in Touch / Danger of Extinction Thread and introduce yourself. We’d love to get to know you!

**** WEEKLY UPDATE ****

Seed Lists Requested
Marcy (Marcy Jo) is ready to take seed requests for the master seed-swapping list. “Email me anytime with your lists..complete or not! I will add to them. I havent started mine yet but I know what I want to grow-just like Lora and am willing to try different types.” So if you have an idea of what you’d like to plant next year, go ahead and e-mail Marcy and she can do updates as catalogs arrive.

Badge Badgering
If you began working on your Farm Kitchen, Farmgirl Gratitude, and/or Bustin’ Out Badge when the HMBC began, it’s just about time to apply for your badge. Congratulations! From Teresa Sue: “Let me know who has finished and when you apply for your badge, okay?” http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=638&whichpage=3

They Say It’s Your Birthday….na na na na….
Sing it with me now. “It’s my birthday too, yea….na na na na….” With the addition of Alee’s birthday to the list (the next one to celebrate by the way) I believe the list is complete at this point. Please check it out and let me know if your birthday is included. If so, you have my heartfelt apologies. Post your birthday in the thread and I will add it super-a.s.a.m.p. http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=663

Last minute update: Thanks to Corinne! She caught that Tina wasn’t in the birthday list, so Tina, if you’re reading this, please post your birthday. How did Corinne manage to make that connection, you ask? She has graciously taken it upon herself to compile a master list of birthdays and addresses (per Teresa Sue’s request). If you would also like your phone number (and e-mail address?) added, please e-mail them to Corinne. If you don’t want your information included on the list, please let her know that also. She will be leaving for France this Friday, Nov. 21 (our Thursday night) so do your mavenly best to get in touch with her before then.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
Can you believe it? This week we will be moving past the halfway mark and heading toward the end of the book. Where has the time gone? I don’t know about the rest of you but this book has been life-changing for me and I’ve already made plenty of changes over the last few years so that’s saying something. This week we’ll be talking about “Slow Food Nations” (Rene, you need to jump in on this one) and Zucchini Larceny (everyone probably has a story for this), chapters 11 and 12. Remember you can follow the discussion at http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=597 in the henhouse or in the HHM/HM Henhouse Connection thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556
Also this book is one of the requirements for the Farm Kitchen “Know Your Food” Beginner Level badge. See the Teresa Sue’s “Badge Alert!!!!” post for more info: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1

Winter Gardening – Part 2
If you haven’t checked out www.wintersown.org yet, here is some more information from Tina: “you can send in more than one envelope if you'd like to grow/save seeds for more than 6 varieties of heirloom tomato. you receive at least 9 varieties of heirlooms per self addressed stamped envelope you send in….this winter they have a slew of heirloom tomato seeds that have been donated all's you have to do is send in a self addressed stamped envelope with 2 stamps and list 6 varieties of tomatoes from their list with an alternate 4 varieties you'd like..and they will send you what is on your list..each envelope I received back had no less than 9 varieties of heirloom tomatoes and 2 extra pkgs of seeds some of the extras were either broccoli rabe, an heirloom bean, or an heirloom sweet squash variety.” I’ll be sending my envelopes to them this week. This is too great a deal to pass up!
