THE MAVENS’ HAVEN
November 1, 2008

Welcome to MJ’s Heirloom Mavens!

When I look out the window of our house I see leaves. It doesn’t matter which window, there are leaves everywhere. In previous years I would smile at the sight, thinking about walking through the leaves, hearing them crunch under my feet. And remember jumping in a big pile of leaves when you were a child? How much fun was that? Not quite as much as an adult I found out a few years ago. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I wasn’t as “light” at 46 as I was at 6. This year I’m smiling for a new reason. Now I also see the leaves as a nice fat layer in our lasagna garden-to-be. I’m smiling now just thinking about it. As much as I love the holiday season, I find myself looking forward to January, settling in with a big stack of seed catalogs, my gardening books and my dreams, planning for next year’s garden. And smiling………….

Mother Hen’s Musings
Look for Mother Hen’s amusing musings (couldn’t resist how that sounded) on a monthly basis beginning next week, our almost 2 month anniversary!

**** MAVEN TO MAVEN ****

Mavens on the Road
Welcome home, Lora! Hope everyone’s feeling better and had a wonderful Trick or Treat Day.
Ruth and family will be returning from Disney funland this weekend. We’re looking forward to hearing all about the adventures and family fun.
Birthday party at the QMD castle! If you live near and/or you are able to travel to Nova, Ohio the weekend of November 14-15, Dawn has an open invitation to come and celebrate her (38th) birthday at the castle. Just post on the DOE or send her an e-mail.

Maven Birthdays
Happy birthday, Amy! The official date is Monday, November 3. The official week is this coming week. Be sure to brighten Amy’s Monday with an onslaught of greetings. She’ll be 39 (and holding?).
Next birthday maven: Mama Hen Dawn – November 13

New Mavens
Are you someone who’s reading the maven posts but unsure about jumping in? Does this newsletter rev up your interest? If you want more information about MJ’s Heirloom Mavens, check out the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=667 and then go to Magazine: Call for Entries / Keeping in Touch / Danger of Extinction Thread and introduce yourself. We’d love to get to know you!

**** WEEKLY UPDATE ****

NOVEMBER
It’s a new month and the unofficial start of the holiday season. At least I start mentally ramping up the plans once the calendar flips to November. For some thoughts and a wonderful recipe, check out Dawn’s NOVEMBER post at http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=662

Time to Break Out the Holiday Recipes
If you’re looking for some new recipes to go with your traditional favorites, be sure to wander over to the recipes thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=572 Several new recipes have been added this week. Yum!

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
The HMBC (Heirloom Maven Book Club) is moving right along. This week in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, we are in the month of April, discussing “Molly Mooching” and “The Birds and the Bees.” Monday (Amy’s birthday) we will move on to chapters seven and eight, covering “Gratitude” and “Growing Trust. Remember you can follow the discussion at http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=597 in the henhouse or in the HHM/HM Henhouse Connection thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25556
Remember this book is one of the requirements for the Farm Kitchen “Know Your Food” Beginner Level badge. See the Teresa Sue’s “Badge Alert!!!!” post for more info: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1

Heirloom Maven Iron-Ons
In anticipation of Teresa Sue’s Heirloom Maven badge design, the iron-on design has been placed on hold. The design will have the words MJ’s Heirloom Mavens intertwined with a tomato plant. What says heirloom better than a tomato?

Countdown to a Maven Christmas!
The deadline for sending your gift is now exactly one month away. For more information and to find some great gift ideas, go to http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=644

**** FUTURE ATTRACTIONS ****

Heirloom Minor at Farmgirl U
The curriculum is nearing completion! Be watching on the DOE for an announcement from Rene in the near future.

Seed-swapping
As we put our gardens to bed and begin planning for next season, visions of new seeds to try dance in our heads. We are in the early stages of organizing but you can check out this thread to catch up on the seed-swapping discussion: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=561 To post your seeds lists and wants, go here: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=589
Amy Grace (graciegreeneyes) and Marcy (Marcy Jo) are coordinating the seed-swapping clearinghouse so watch for updates as we move from putting this year’s gardens to bed and begin planning for next year.

**** REMINDERS ****

As the ads ramp up in the last few days, here’s just one more reminder to make your voice heard. Tuesday is national election day. Exercise your right to vote and I’ll see you at the poll.

For most of us, this weekend is the end of daylight savings time when we get to set the clock back Saturday night and regain that hour we “lost” half a year ago when we sprang forward.

Monday Maven Madness: As your body adjusts to that extra hour you may find yourself a little more awake in the evenings so join us if you can for a chat, 9pm EST, 6pm PST. Also, be sure to post your available/non-available times for chatting in the henhouse: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=659

Here’s where you can find information on badges the mavens are currently working toward:
Beginner Farm Kitchen Badge: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=609&whichpage=1
Beginner Farmgirl Gratitude Badge: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=637
Beginner Bustin’ Out Badge: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=638

Remember to check out Our Mother Hen’s nest box in the henhouse where she will be laying her eggs filled with gardening tips, tidbits and treasures. It’s labeled as the bulletin board, but Nest Box is much more mavenly, dontcha think? http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=169

Be sure to check out maven Tina’s online magazine, Small Town Living at www.stliving.net

The Heirloom Mavens Save Our Seeds – Feed Our Future bumper stickers are now available. For more information, go to the Heirloom Mavens Beginners Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=667

You can use PayPal to purchase Heirloom Maven bumperstickers, bracelets and to donate to the Maven Scholarship Fund ( http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=89 )

Check out the Heirloom Maven blog site at www.heirloommavens.blogspot.com

When possible, purchase books through Seed Savers Exchange to support their efforts in saving heirloom seeds for future generations www.seedsavers.org

Mark your calendars for the first annual Heirloom Maven Spring Fling and Farmgirl Round-Up http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=568

If you get lost in the Heirloom Maven lingo, you can find the lingo list in the Beginner’s Guide http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/HenHouseSnitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=582

That’s all for this week, mavens. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please send me an e-mail and I will get back with you a.s.a.m.p. In the meantime, have a great week and see you in the DOE and/or henhouse.
