I just started a chapter here for Spokane and the surrounding area.

I got my kit a few days ago, and while I am going to work on getting some plans made for it, and finding some members. I intend to have our first chapter meeting right after the new year so we can all get through the holidays without any extra things to frazzle us.

One thing I would like to request as a first chapter project, if any of you are interested would be pictures of your home made gifts so I can send a little scrapbook of them to Mary Janes Farm. I would like to get that out before the New Year so if you could just take a little snapshot or send me a digital picture by e-mail I can get it all together in a pretty little book and send the farm some eye candy from the Spokane area.

Has anyone gotten in touch with MJS farm to take over the group? I was really hoping so, because I had such high hopes for it.

I am on day 7 of my life in the apartment in Helena and It's starting to feel a little more home-y, but htere isn't a whole heck of a lot I can do for the group from here.

If anyone wants to take over you have my blessing. I hope you have a lot of fun!!

Bummers!

I'd LOVE to get together with you guys and see your place, Julia. UNFORTUNATELY I have to work that day. It'll be my fourth of six days in a row and the one day I have to work late (I'll be gone from about 7 AM until around 6 PM) and then pick Linnea up at the after school program afterward.

Rats! Sigh.

You'll have to let me know how it goes.

OF COURSE!!! our motto on the farm is "the more, the merrier..you get yourself here and we'll take care of the rest." We are always open to having kids and dogs here.. We have 5 dogs and have visiting dogs makes it all the more fun! they tend to run and run through the fields..very nice! I'll keep checking the post to see if anyone else in the Spokane area is interested in joining us.

I am really sorry to hear about your chickens that is so sad!

I am thrilled that your kids had a good time here. next time I'll show them all the fin stuff downstairs too.. I was hoping Hal would be into taking them down so we could all hang out where the tea was and not have to worry about going back and forth, but he seemed awfully content in front of his cartoons :)

I have strawberries and rhubarb too along with oodles of raspberries and blackberries so I am excited to learn how to can them properly. So far I have only done freezer jam with the strawberries and rhubarb and the freezer filled up a little too fast that way.

I really wanted to go the pesticide free route with my trees, but when we moved in our trees had been neglected for over 20 years and the little borers who live under the bark were thriving. I was given the advice that if you do the spray enough to get rid of the problem, and then continue with the natural methods after that you shouldn't have to worry about them coming back.

Having been here for less than a year I have not put this into practice yet so it remains to be seen if it will work as promised.

Bobbi~ thank you so much for hosting the get together yesterday! just lovely.. it was fantastic to meet you, Sara and Karen as well.. I would have loved to have stayed a little longer. Bobbi, thank you for making my kids feel right at home! As we were leaving, I don't know if you heard Reo say, "I loved Bobbi's house..maybe we can come to another party?!" out of the mouths of babes..

We have a little orchard here; apples, cherries, peaches, plums and pears. We have all kinds of pests; leaf fungi, deer, yellow-jackets and some worms but nothing really major at this point. We don't do any spraying but plenty of fertilizing and pruning. In fact, we have an arborist coming over next week for his annual consultation on the trees around the property. I don't have much to offer on worms..I'd feed them to my chickens, but in case you hadn't read my other thread..my dogs killed most of them today..grizzly!!! eeksss..anyway..
Canning: yes..we do mucho canning here every season. I begin the canning process in June/July when the strawberries and rhubarb peek...then it peeters out until October and November when the harvest comes in full speed. I'm thinking of buying a pressure canner this year..still investigating that..right now I can only fruit jams and jellies, butters, salsas, tomato sauces, pickles and relishes..would be happy to share what little I know. I've been doing it now for about 6 years.. I find the greatest key to canning is all the prep work beforehand..its an awful lot like cooking..one you have everything prepped, the real cooking part is a breeze!
hope you all have a lovely weekend!! warm regards, Julia

Everything I could find suggested a dormant spray in the spring and to prune back all the wormy stuff in the fall.. thats why my tree looksed so scrawny.. It was huge when we moved in but it had some kind of little boring worm in a lot of the older branches and it was full of catterpiller larvea too. They are red delicious apples. I also have a peach tree, a pear tree, and a plum tree. they say the same thing for worms in those too.

For my birthday this year I got all the things I need to start canning but I need to learn how to do it. That could be a really fun chapter project come canning season!

Bobbi, Sara, and Julia-

How GREAT to meet all of you yesterday! It was fun to put your names together with faces and personalities. I hope we can get together again soon.

Bobbi, you said you originally ran across MJ's site while looking for info for your apple trees. What DO you do to help keep those worms away? I have a couple of apple trees that need some help. Is it some sort of dormant spray? What kind of trees do you have? I have MacIntosh and Jonagold trees -- I had a yellow delicious but the mice and ants got into the root system and it fell over. I also have some Van Sweet cherries that are SO yummy! There was an already old plum tree in the backyard that is dying. It produced some great fruit in its time. There was also a peach tree with THE best peaches when we first moved in but we lost that a few years back.

Do any of you ladies I met yesterday do any canning? I did acidic stuff, like peaches and tomatoes, a few years back and would like to get into it again.

Looking forward to seeing you all on this website until the next time we meet!

Hi Bobbi-
Thank YOU. What a fun time. Those scones were fabulous. I hadn't been to a real tea party in ages. And what great kids- you can tell they're all so loved.
I sent you the pix, altho I obviously forgot about the red-eye setting. We look like a bunch of demons! And now you'll believe me when I say I'm the world's most unphotogenic person...
I think our dh's would probably have a great time- mine's into his new xBox360 & some game called Dark something. (you can tell my interest is really high...)
Isn't it wild how different we all are- but we're all definitely farmgirls.
Looking forward to seeing you all again...
Love, Sara

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Well thank you Julia, Sara and Karin for coming to my little meet and greet today! It was fun to have you over and to put faces with the names :) Julia, thank you for the eggs, the cross stitch for the book, the honey and the fairy petals. Your kids are really sweet! I'll get the little scrapbook put together and out to MH's farm as soon as I can.

I couldn't say it with him sitting right there but I thought it was hilarious that Hal sat there and watched the kids cartoon all the way through even after the kids lost interest. Speaking of which, Sara Your husband and mine would probably get along well. Which games is he into right now?

Thank you Karin for coming out after work. It was nice meeting you, and next month I'll try to schedule it a little better so you can make it for the whole thing. If you ever want to you can bring your daughtor with you, as you can see we are a pretty kid friendly bunch. Thanks for letting Halsey climb all over you too!

I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Hey, Bobbi!

So, is it a go for 3:30? I will try and make it after work -- that is, if the work on my car (new parking brake cable) gets finished today and I don't have to take it back in Friday.

I will send you an email so you can send me directions to your place.

Thanks! Karin

I don't mind if there are just a few to start, most things start pretty small until word gets around. The sun was really great, I while the baby was napping I took my oldest out in the back yard to run around in the snow. She got herself so tired that she's wiped out now too so I have the house to myself for a while.

Right now I am thinking 3:30 would be a good time because 2 people have expressed an interest in doing it in the afternoon.. 3:30 is late enough in the afternoon that if it goes for an hour and a half you could still make the tail end of it. I have sent e-mails to some of the folks who have asked me about it in the past to try to generate some participation, and in each e-mail I also asked if 3:30 will be ok or not. Once we get more people we can get a set time that will hopefully work for everyone and we'll also have activities at different times too so everyone can get involved in something.

Does that sound ok?

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you.

I get done with work at 4 PM and it takes me just over half an hour to get home.

Would you rather wait to get a few more folks lined up to come before you have one of these?

Isn't the sunshine beautiful today!? The snow surprised me this AM, though.

So far I just have Julia, I haven't hammered out the time because I was waiting to see what would work for others in the group.

How long is your commute to get out to the state line after work?

I was SO excited to see a date set! Now I just hope I can come.

I work that Friday and the earliest I could make it is 4:30. Kind of a bummer -- it sounds like the kind of get together that would be a nice afternoon event. Anyway, if you're not able to schedule it later in the day, I'll understand.

How many other ladies are planning to come?

I don't think I need you to bring anything but I appriciate your offer. I am a co owner of a moms group for the Spokane area. We have play groups and various functions like that so I am pretty used to having kids and their nervous moms around :) I am actually the same way when I go somewhere with my kids so it's ok. I don't have any set project set up for this. It will be more of a social time and a brainstorming thing, and you are welcome to hang out for a while if it works out but I know how 2 year olds can be, so I wont be insulted if you have to cut it short.

I usually baby gate off the rooms they aren't supposed to have access to and the rooms that aren't off limits are pretty darn kid proof.. they have to be with a 1 year old and a 2 year old running around :) Really there isn't much to worry about.

you are so sweet! My son has never seen a video game so this should be very cool for him. Don't let that mislead you however, he loves home movies (of himself, of course!!) and various other movies as well. both my kids are pretty easy going. I hope it will be cool with you too that we may only be able to stay a short time....you know how these things go.. you sound so completely flexible but I just wanted to be clear. I sometimes get a little nervous and guarded, actually, about how much I'll be able to participate knowing I've got kids to keep an eye on too. I sooo want to be able to participate in this entirely for myself, but the truth of the matter is that my children come first most of the time. sometimes a sad reality but one I doubt I will ever, ever regret!
what can I bring? smiles to you, julia hayes

Awesome!! the kids should be fine. Our house is a split level with a good sized playroom in open view one level down from the living room, so it's set up very well for this sort of thing with kids. I know we have plenty to entertain the 2 year old. The 4 year old might just be thrilled with the fact that I am married to a video game fanatic. Our 4 year old nephew can't get enough of all the games that are here whenever they come to visit.. if thats not his thing we have lots of books and paper and markers too.
