Would love to hear from anyone living in this area. Is it family friendly? Tell me all about your experience in this community.
Thanks Denise

I live about an hour and a half from Roanoke. It's BEAUTIFUL! The mountains and sunsets and such. Roanoke is a city, but not a big one. I watch the news out of Roanoke and it doesn't have nearly the crime and problems that Richmond has. I do know it has a wonderful 2 store mall. Here are the links for the local TV stations. Maybe you could scan through them, and find out some more.

I'm sure you could search them for school articles and whatnot...
Hope this helps,

My sister lives there with her four boys (her three and a cousin of theirs.) YES IT IS ABSOLUTELY FAMILY FRIENDLY! From what she and the boys have told me about their schools - it has the best public schools I have ever seen. One of her boys requires medication and counseling and the schools have gone above and beyond to help keep him in with his friends and cousins. The resources that she has available to help her are very, very impressive - way beyond anything I have seen anywhere else. So much so that my nephew is staying there instead of coming to live with other family members because we can just not get anything near what is offered there.

Not only that - the activities available for kids are tremendous. At the elementary school level, 1/3 of all the kids are on the chess team. All four of her boys were on the chess team for a couple of years and did well at the local tournaments which included many of the schools in the area. It was a huge thing there and the kids all loved it.

Kids have a ton of choices for athletics, music and drama, newspaper and photography, culinary arts etc. even at the junior high level. I'm totally impressed. It may be that being a college town emphasis on education is doubly stressed but it doesn't really matter. My sister and her family LOVE IT there. They have participated in soccer leagues, boy scouts, a competitive family swim team (at their church), choir, baseball leagues, etc.

There is camping and hiking and outdoor activities galore. It's really awesome there in the fall. The colors are amazing. The weather is tough if you aren't used to the winters in the mountains but my sister wouldn't live anywhere else.

Denise, sorry no one has responded to your inquiry as yet. I'm "bumping" this up by posting a response today. Usually we all jump right in and provide lots of great responses!

I live in Virginia, but not near Blacksburg/Roanoke area so I can't tell you anything about the area. There are several farmgirls in VA so hopefully they'll see this post and give more information. There are also 8 or 9 Farmgirl Chapters, according to the search I just did at the Farmgirl Connection Home page where there is a link to start or join a chapter.

Are you planning to move to the area yourself, or sending a kid to college there?

Hope you get some good responses!

P.S. Small world, I spent a lot of time in Bradenton as a kid, since my grandparents moved there to retire. They lived on a street called "Easy Street" - it was always a great joke that they had it made after working hard all of their lives...living on Easy Street!
