35 years ago today I had my beautiful red-haired, blue-eyed daughter, Missy. I can't believe how the years have gone by so quickly!! Missy is a Farmgirl too but just hasn't gotten signed up here yet. She has MJ's new book and is the one that told me about it.

She is one of the best things that ever happened in my life. We are not only mother and daughter, but really good friends. I am very grateful for that!

What a wonderful assignment that was and how wonderful that you enjoyed it! Great work transcends time and space, doesn't it? The greatest poets and writers will live on forever through their writings and touch us in ways they would never have imagined!

Molly, one year in a writing class, we had to pick a favorite author. Didnt matter if that author was a poet, screenwriter etc. we just had to pick someone without knowing why. I of course picked Emily Dickinson. Our assignment was to write to that author. Didnt matter if they werent with us anymore, we had to write to them and tell them why their work and they themselves, mattered to us, why we were drawn to their work and how they made a difference in our lives. My first thought was, I cant do this, how do you tell someone that isn't even alive anymore how you feel about them & their work! I got an "A". It was THE" most fun I ever had in a writing class. I couldnt stop once I began. I told her everything, I asked her some questions about how she got to the place she was to write some of her poems, some so light and others so dark. I still have it. I think that one writing assignment got me even closer to her work and helped me understand her more.
My husband teases me, most of my favorite authors are all dead, but never their work!!! Michele

Michele, Emily Dickinson is my favorite poet, and this is my favorite poem of hers! I relate to her sensibilities and it's amazing that although she spent most of her short life inside her bedroom she had an incredible understanding of the world that even us, who are out in it everyday, can only glimpse.

My maternal grandmother died the year before I was born, so I never knew her, but feel a kinship with her that transcends all that. I feel her spirit nearby me quite often, especially during my pregnancies! It is so wonderful to have older women in our lives that can mentor us, isn't it?

Molly, I love Emily Dickinson, every time I read it on your post, it takes me to a very peaceful place. You sound like you have a great relationship with your mom. Both my parents are gone, even my stepmother. I loved them all. My daughter was only 2 y/old when my father died, 4 when my stepmom died. She wasnt born when my bio mom died. We have a wonderful women who we love as a mother & grandmother and feel very blessed to have her in out lives. Shes 86 years young, taught us so much and still is. Were very grateful to have her in our lives. Michele

My mom was LIVID when I told her we were going to be homeschooling, and I had to remind her that I am an adult now and will only make decisions after lots of research and prayer. She still doesn't agree with it, but she's better about it My mom stayed patient with me through the "rough patches" in life and was always there for me, and I think that's why our relationship is still so strong today.

Michele, you were one of 12? That's incredible! I so love large families!

Hello kay, happy birthday Missy! "The Family" I've found, rarely understands these things. Most of my 11 brothers & sisters cant seem to grasp most of the things I love & love to do. My husband & daughter do, my 14 y/old still enjoys being with me, I know she will "go away" for awhile but God willing she will come back.I pray when shes your daughters age, she'll still want to do things with me, or at least be around me. Other moms have told me if you have a good relationship now & always did, then after "those rough" times, it will be fine. I guess I dont want those rough times. Good luck with the soap making, sounds great. This fall Britta & I want to make candles outside. Looking forward to it. Michele

You guys are so sweet! Thank you so much and I will pass the birthday wishes on to Missy. Yes we do have a very special bond and friendship. We talk at least once a day (sometimes more). Molly -- Missy and I are actually going to make soap together! We're going to Essential Wholesale in Portland tomorrow so she can spend birthday money on carrier oils. This weekend will be our first batch!

When I homeschooled Stephanie (my youngest) my husband's parents and grandparents were just fit to be tied. And they wouldn't understand the soapmaking either!! Oh well!

Kay, that is so sweet! Happy Birthday to Missy! I don't have a daughter of my own (yet), but my mom and I have that sweet and special bond. We have a sort of "esp" thing and know when we are thinking of each other, even though we are 2,000 miles apart (she is in CA). We speak almost every day on the phone. I cherish my relationship with her, even if we don't always see "eye to eye" on certain things (like homeschooling and me wanting to learn to make homemade soap...she actually became flabbergasted when I told her I wanted to learn how! She said "why on earth would you want to do that? I remember growing up and us HAVING to do that and how much work it was!!") . I look forward to having a daughter of my own and cultivating that type of relationship with her!

Missy, you are lucky to have such a beautiful mother!

It IS amazing how fast the time goes by. My oldest is 27 now and such a grown man. I just am constantly amazed that the little guy who used to follow me around and make up his own words for things is so grown up now.
I hope Missy has a happy birthday..she sure is lucky to have you for a mom!!

Happy Birthday Missy!!!! Celebrate the gift of life your mother gave you! And MOM Kay, you and only you can claim this beautiful daughter! What a blessing that you both have such a loving and close relationship! Friendship between mothers and daughters is something to celebrate everyday. You've done well Kay...pat yourself on the back!
