Posted - Apr 27 2007 : 08:44:42 AM Hey girls, I have these two amazing pear trees that just don't know when to stop! I believe they are Asian pears, and they look just like the pears in MaryJanes Ideabook on page 123. These are mainly used to canning, so I'm sure ya'll know better than I, what to do with them. I have an elderly couple that has been picking the pears for many years, adn now that they are too old to, I pick them for them...They make an EXCELLENT pear preserve! I have the recipe to. You also can put the pears in a brown paper back and in a cool dry place, and wait till winter and they will be sweet, not too soft, but sweet like storebought Bartlett Pears!
If anyone is interested, I really want to pick and package and send these out as soon as the treebranches look like it's about the touch the ground, and before the hornets get to them. So let me know if you are interested. They are 100% organic, I don't spray or dust them.
Check these trees out!! The branches will bend down to the fence, they will be soo heavy with pears!

Posted - Apr 30 2007 : 9:20:39 PM Oh, Cristine - don't worry a bit - I was just looking at our fruit trees here this morning, and there has been some pretty severe winter weather/frost damage. I'm guessing it's all over the place this year - seems like winter was a mean one...
XOXO, Libbie

Posted - Apr 29 2007 : 1:52:41 PM Well. the branches I can reach are frost bit, so now I feel like a complete * HEE HAW* for posting this before I even looked at the tree. I guess the frost has taken a while to take it's toll. If all goes well, I will be getting everyones addresses gathered up as soon as I can tell if there will be fruits or not...

Posted - Apr 29 2007 : 06:40:11 AM I just love Asian pears - they taste to me sort of like a cross between an apple and a pear - you all will SO enjoy them!!! That's so generous, Cristine!

Posted - Apr 28 2007 : 5:03:14 PM I would love some also! I haven't canned them or made preserves, but I just peel, core and eat. They are really good and refreshing. Even though you eat them when they are firm they feel like given you a bit of refreshment too. I was told that you can use them just as you use apples. I have chopped them really small and added them to pancakes along with crystillized ginger; sauteed them with cinnamon; used them in a small pie; and added them to salad on a hot summer day. I really like them a lot! Amanda

Posted - Apr 28 2007 : 3:33:37 PM I was reading up on these pears and it said they stay crisp unlike the Bartletts, so they are really good for canning, and keeping...yes, I'm excited too! AND I'll be glad to help, pick, pack and ship with you!!

You are so sweet and generous! It is so nice of you to share your fruit. I hope the frost didn't hurt your tree too much!

Posted - Apr 28 2007 : 07:54:40 AM Oh yay!! I'm so glad ya'll are excited about this too!! They are no where near being ready yet. I'm thinking mid summer.. :/ I hope that is ok wil ya'll. Georgann, I'd love to have you!!! The reason I asked so far in advance is that when they start to get ready I want to have boxes and packaging ready to go so as not to hinder the process.
Ya'll gotta know that these are not the nice soft Bosc or Bartlett Pears like you get in the store. These are mostly used for canning.
I just went out to take a pic, and it appears that frost bit the bottom baby fruits, so no pics. Let's pray the rest of the tree is ok! :)
