Posted - Apr 07 2011 : 09:06:40 AM Is it okay to ask for a bit of money to make the trade fair. I have another whole house to get rid of... There is nothing I need, but I cant afford to send packages out, and I have seriously loaded the shops here with a boatload of things from the hoarding house that I am cleaning out now 52 boxes of cookbooks, 15 bags of clothes-- plus various other things this couple no longer needed or wanted plus of course a storage unit that will be sold off at a sale. My mother has just decieded she is moving out of her home of 48 years and is looking to me to get rid of the contents of her home. My mom is like most-- keep the good stuff for good and make due with other stuff. I have told her I expect her to take and use the stuff she has kept for good. But the house is stuffed with patterns, knic knacks dishes. The alert is out for the brothers and sisters to speak up for what they desire, but none of them like vintage items. I cant spend my whole summer running sales, cause with my cleaning business I have clients that are needing me constantly. And my sideline of cleaning out hoarding houses is expanding. Heads up-- if your heading this way, we have great thrift stores here, and they will be stocked with all kinds of things-- make your requests now and we will work something out. Thanks for letting me rant- lost control there for a minute! |

Posted - Apr 09 2011 : 10:30:58 AM I haven't bartered yet, but I have to agree with all those who thought of having both options open. I have a large family, so I don't have very much that's worth bartering (I have mostly rough-n-tough boys...)and I feel like I might miss out because of that, but yet, I would hate to step on the toes of those that have something nice to barter. Leaving the option open and communicating what's best for you sounds like the right way to do it. Good luck and blessings!

Posted - Apr 08 2011 : 1:04:17 PM Inge, I sent you an email. I think that bartering with cash is perfectly ok. It like an online yard or garage sale.

Posted - Apr 08 2011 : 12:10:13 PM I agree with you Anne 100%, sometimes you just have to do what is comfortable for you...I think thats the great thing about this is sometimes we don't have barter items people want but we have seed $ we can use...some people may get upset over the cash thing but its up to the orignal person who stated the barter to decide if they want the $ or a barter/trade of something...I am always open for anything & sometimes people really want/need what you have & offer cash. I say go with the flow :) its only 'stuff' right?....Michele'

Posted - Apr 08 2011 : 11:31:39 AM I don't always feel like I have items that others would want either, which is why it's nice if there's another option. When I do put things on for bartering I'm very happy to accept a barter or money, I listed a price one time but wasn't sure if I should put it on marketplace then? I also sometimes ask that people chip in for shipping, or pay the difference in shipping, as shipping heavy items can be very costly and some items may not be worth shipping out. The cost of shipping is so prohibitive. I think it's all about communication and making sure that each person is happy with the barter.

Posted - Apr 08 2011 : 03:54:59 AM Inge, I agree with Cindy, sounds like great fun, but I know alot of work too. I am interested in old cookbooks, I'd come over and sort through with you if you weren't so darn far away. Also love old fireking and blue ball jars with the bail wire and glass lids. Anything to do with herbs, for ex. I got an old linen towel handpainted with HERBS at goodwill for .75 and framed it for $240 because I loved it so much, yes I'm insane. Heather~If I ever have anything up for barter, I'll work with you on it, I'm in the same type of pinch right now, I can relate. Learning to save seeds and grow heirloom, drying herbs but only had enough for us this past year, hoping for a great crop this year so I have it to trade! I'm growinig for our own Greek blend, and for a French blend as well. Cindygirl~ I think that's a nice option, I'm fine with it, but I'm a newbie...

Posted - Apr 07 2011 : 11:47:29 AM I agree a lot of times I think I miss out on things, cause I really have nothing to barter, we have bare bones right now, and not only that but for years now I have been very picky about every thing I buy, I only buy things for a purpose, and really I don't have extra things to barter with, cause every thing I buy (not much) has a use that I need it for. So often I kind of think about offering cash, then I wonder if that is cheating the people who have things to barter out of being in it. You know? So for me I would rather just have a money value put on somethings.

Posted - Apr 07 2011 : 09:44:26 AM Hi Inge sent you an e-mail but yes like M is saying Its up to you just let everyone know up front what you want. I think all of us agree that postage is a biggy when it comes to a trade, but still cheaper than gas !!
I would consider it fun but I know hard work is also involved, Hugs on your journey : ))

Posted - Apr 07 2011 : 09:33:07 AM Yes it is quite alright to ask for $ on the shipping or to even do a cash sale instead of a barter if that would help you with some of the nicer items...ie vintage stuff....I am always offering to pay cash for something if there is nothing I can barter with that they want...I know for patterns, vintage fabrics, linens ect I would gladly pay a fair price & shipping for them.
I would be interested in doilies, old cotton sheets, old pillowcases, hankerchiefs, old table runners, old lacy curtains made of cotton
Laces, older country style cotton fabrics, wooden spools, old sewing items:scissors ect, tatting supplies, ribbons, older trims
1950's or older dress patterns, 1950's or older little girl patterns, older iron ons
Any 1960's or older crafting mags/booklets or books
late 1930's Good house keeping, McCalls, Family Circle, Womens day type mags
Hopefully this will help you out some....I do old fashioned style clothes (think little house on the prairie...so am always in need of fabric, laces ect for them
have a great day..I know...with what you have to deal with it may be tough...but just think of the fun you can have with the bartering & meeting new hens...like me!...Michele'
