I am looking for some wool roving so I can felt some of my handcrafted soap. I have tried different blends and have yet to come up with the right one I need. Merino? Not sure...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would be willing to pay or trade with some of my hand crafted soap!

Thank you!

Wool from Corridales and Columbians felts really well. I also knit little bags on 3 needles in the round, sew the bottom shut and then felt, put my bar of soap in, stitch the top shut. I like to knit in a ribbing and the texture has a little ridge that defolates as you shower. I also have some rovings from my flock of sheep, and we will be shearing 50 head again in a month or so. You can see my sheep on my blog. I have several different breeds of sheep.

prairielandherbs and melody - i think i have something you might be interested in. i lived in Vermont several years ago and bought a spinning wheel and come carded wool (i believe that is the correct term.) all i know is that it is some beautiful stuff. one is natural/undyed and one batch is a beautiful blue color. i could get some pictures. i don't know the amounts. i think they might be a decent amount - i bought it at the fiber fair in Vermont. let me know if either of you might be interested. it's been sitting in a bag of mine for quite some time now.

Melodie, I'm a spinner - i've got a stash you wouldn't believe. Ha. :) I"ll dig through and find some to send you samples of. If it works and you want more then we'll talk, ok? Give me a day or two. Actually, let's do this. Please email me with your name and mailing address. I have been iced out of my store for THREE DAYS now. Well that is just pretty darn cool! Great now I have another creation to try. I have just started making soap and love it! My husband is a taxidermist so I get bear fat quite often. It renders into the most beautiful lard and makes just the best soap. Soft and sudsy! Thanks for sharing I love your stuff!!

It's lovely....if you can find the exact type of wool roving to use!! I have attempted several times and the last batch I made was wonderful...except I have no clue what type of wool it was ( I had tossed the bag out long ago). I purchased about 4-ounces at a Farmers Market in Marquette, MI. and it worked beautifully. It's kind of like a sweater for your soap Ha! Ha! I wrap the wool roving around a bar of my handcrafted soap, and after rolling it around with my hands or in a plastic baggie incorporating the soap with a splash of hot water occasionally, I then end up with a lovely felted bar of soap. It is used for an awesome exfoliate for your scratchy elbows and or winter heels! When the soap is all gone (no wasted soap ends...YUCK) you will have a cute little felt bag---snip the top and VOILA a little felted change purse, etc. And they are so darn cute! I can't keep them in stock when I do my soap shows....I have a picture posted on my blog if you would like to take a peak!

prairielandherbs,

I don't even remember what they were one... had a blend of cashmere? and one batch I recieved wasn't even washed and it smelled really bad (e-bay)... What have you got? I know felting soap can be a real CHORE, but I do really well with it at my shows; felted around my own hand crafted soap, so I would really like to get a good size batch going for this coming season. Let me know when you have a sec okay?

Thanks!

well...what blends were you using? some wool felts beautifull, some kinds (suffolk, for example) really does not felt at all. I felted wool around soap once or twice and decided itw as too much work for me! I have plenty of white wool of various kinds.
melodie Posted - Jan 20 2010 : 09:20:02 AM
prairielandherbs....I have tried several different blends and really had to work hard to get it to felt properly. I am new at this. What would you suggest? I would love to get some wool roving from you. Do you blend it with another type of wool roving? Also, I would like a natural color (uncolored) or as close to white as possible. I actually had great success in dyeing my wool roving before with blue kool-aid! let me know what we can do if you would like to barter or would rather be paid by the ounce.

thank you!!
