I have been on here a while now and have not looked much at the barters. I know there have been a number of new members that might be as uninformed as I am. Tell us newbies how to barter, ok.

As to your question about swap items being new or homemade or storebought....the Swap Leader will usually outline that in her set of rules. Most encourage homemade, but it's fine if you purchase, say an apron, and then add a little something to it to make it your own - like a ruffle and some trim or embroider some little thing on the pocket, something like that. All of us here really appreciate the handmade items and understand that sometimes it's not possible to do that, because you can't sew or don't have the time for a 100% homemade item. So we're all pretty good with that too! But usually the Leader of the swap will set rules, as Alee said, and they will be pretty self-explanitory. And if they are not, the ladies here are wonderful about responding to questions, so don't feel like you can't join in if you don't understand something - just ask! Have fun and welcome to the wonderful world of barter/swaps!!!!

Well, then when I get started re organizing my house I should have tons to barter.

The swaps...do you have to make the item or buy the item or what? Like Thanksgiving Apron Swap, do I have to make one or find one somewhere?
I do understand I think. But if anyone else who is new would like to ask about any of this we could most likely all learn.

I would say that BARTERING is a FABULOUS way to "do business". As a vendor at our local Farmers Market (we have a craft booth) we do that a lot. We don't do tons because we also need $$$. But if someone wants one of my cards I'll exchange it for cookies or something.

I think the most important thing is, as Alee, says for it to be EQUAL!!!
I also think that in the themed swaps, such as the Christmas Apron Swap, if one signs up they realize that it is IMPORTANT that they follow through and not leave their partner "hanging" without it being FAIR and EQUAL. I have seen some Farmgirls decide not to participate in some that they would really like to because they have been "burned" too many times. That takes all the fun out of it!!

Farmgirl Barter is one of the most fun, active and interesting places for us to be!! I'm thankful for it!!!

I think Alee pretty much summed it up! I have something to add though. I love to do swaps and barters! When i barter something, it is usually something that i have around the house that i'm just not so in love with anymore, so i will list it on here and someone that will love it will be about to have a chance at it. I think its a great way to get rid of somethings and get some new things around the home without going and spending a bunch!

Hi Lavonna-

Bartering is a "however you make it" type of situation... For example if I were to say "Looking for Antique Tea Cups" and you said you had some you would like to barter to me, then I would ask you what you would like for them. I make soap and dolls and such so I would offer you a choice of things that I have or make that I am willing to exchange. The goal is just to make sure both people feel that the barter was a equal.

Swaps are a bit different in that there are usually a set item or type or item. The Swap Mamma outlines the rules such as the shipping due date, item shipped, and if you send the item to her to divy out to everyone or if you mail directly to a partner etc.

Hope that helps?
