Hi ladies !

I just bought a hot water bath canner this weekend and I'm going to try canning for the first time. I have had two people tell me the best "beginners" book is the Ball Blue Book for Canning.

Does anyone have a copy they would like to sell or trade for something from Northeast PA?

Thanks!

Luanne

I got mine in the corner drug/hardware store in Black Mountain, North Carolina. It cost 5.99. And I love it It is not the new yellow one, but it has so much information in it!

The new Ball book just came out (it's yellow this year) but it's still the "blue book". I use many of the recipes from the book. I have more people ask where I got my Bread and Butter pickle recipe and you guessed it "the blue book".

I found a couple of books on canning at Costco today. They were 18.99 for hardbacks. One was a Ball book and the other was a "small batch" canning book. They both seemed pretty nice.

Hello! Luanne ~
Good for you! Knowing how to can is a wonderful talent to have.
Until you can find the Ball Blue Book, be sure to check out their website. It's loaded with How To's, recipes and video demos and tutorials, lots of answers!

Hi Luanne! Good luck with your canning. It is so rewarding (and tastes better too!)

I rarely follow recipes, but in canning I do just because there is so much potential for health disaster. The canning recipes in the Ball book have been tested and all the quantitites and proportions are safe, so make sure you don't adjust quantities of things that may change the pH level. Just read the Ball book...it's excellent! And have fun.

I'm going to probably start with tomatoes and maybe peaches - also maybe some blueberry jam. I have a ton of blueberries available behind the office where I work.

I think I'll start with real small batches in case I don't do it right!!!

I wish to could come and can with you! It would be so much fun! Wait until the Winter time when you pull out a jar of something you canned you will thank yourself many times!

What are you thinking of canning for your first time!

Have fun!

Thanks ladies !

Any canning advice you have for a "newbie" would be greatly appreciated!!!

Tammy - I assume by "white stuff" you're talking about all our snow up here - it can hold off for a few more weeks as far as I'm concerned!!! Of course, I grew up in Vermont, so winter is nothing new to me!!

The Ball bluebook is one of my favorite I have highlighted many recipes so it may be your first canning book but you will keep coming back to it. Have a great time getting ready for the white stuff to start.

Luanne, they are in the canning section there, not the book section. If not let me know I've got a couple of them.

You can get A Ball Blue book at Walmart. It is the cheapest place I know to get one.
