Does anyone have a book or instructions on how to make your own sewing patterns they would like to barter for? I have the general idea of how to do it, but would like more specific tips and tricks.

I found the website that I had been talking about. It's called "Vintage Sewing Info" by Vintage Sewing Reference Library, Inc. Their website offers free online access to public domain sewing books. The URL is:

The books "Modern Pattern Design," by Harriet Pepin (1942)
and "Ladies' Garment Cutting and Making," by F. R. Morris (early 1940s) have very detailed information on making your own patterns.

It's a great website, and in addition to the sewing books (some including a few vintage apron patterns), they have excellent instructions on millinery and glovemaking.

Back in the early 1970s, there was a book called "The Illustrated Hassle-Free Make Your own Clothes Book," by Sharon Rosenberg and Joan Wiener. It has basic instructions for making simple clothing without patterns, and I've been using their instructions successfully for years.
If you're still looking for a book or instructions, it's still available on Amazon. I'd barter mine, but I still use it. There was also a "sequel" to that book, but I didn't find that one as helpful as the first.
There is also a website out there with a scanned in copy of a circa 1910/1920 sewing instruction manual, with instructions for making patterns for detailed and tailored clothes. The whole thing is downloadable, for free, in a .pdf file. Unfortunately, my computer recently died a horrible smoking death, and I haven't restored everything to the new computer yet (including my own copies of the pdf file, and the link to and name of the website where it's available). Let me know if you're still interested, and I'll see if I can find it again in my backups, and will post the link here.

Are you looking for babies, yourself? I have a Cd That if i feed it the measurements it will print the patterns to fix. I have a few pattern CD's. Could I print something for you???

I don't know if you are still looking,but I have a book for making children's patterns and they list French Touch and French Touch II by Angela Muka for adult patterns. I hope this might help. There is also one called The Perfect Fit. If I run across any to send I will let you know! |

Thanks for all your ideas. If someone comes up with a book they'd like to barter. Let me know! I am not very good at taking things back to the library and to broke to buy things right now! I found a wonderful pattern making system online, but it's 120 bucks. It has a little video introduction and looks like it would be super easy. But, alas, it will need to go on my wish list for some other day!

I recently checked out the book Sew What! Skirts from the library. It has a great section that instructs you on how to make skirts using your own hip and waist measurements. I used it to make my own pattern for a really cute and easy skirt. If your library doesn't have it, they will usually do an interlibrary loan if you ask. Or you could go to fetchbook.info and type in the title, and then it will show all of the online stores and the comparative prices. I use it all the time to find cheap books. |

Here's a link that sells Sloper patterns...this is where all design begins and all pattern companies have their own Slopers that all of their patterns evolve from.

This site teaches alot to you if you are new to the design world. I think you will enjoy it. There are many slopers to buy but I think they are priced reasonably.
There again you can purchase a readymade pattern for a plain simple top, dress, skirt, etc. and experiment with slicing the pattern to widen it or to bring it in closer or make it shorter or longer. Buy you a roll of the "removable" tape..this way you can experiment and be able to keep moving your pattern around without tearing it.
Then you also can take your own clothing that fits perfectly and make you another pattern from it. I've got that book at the mountain house..will bring it back with me next month.

Hi,
I have a book titled 'Publish your patterns' It's a book that teaches you how to write, print and market your designs. Does that sound like something you would be interested in? It's a great little book wtih a lot of information, but it is not just on how to write patterns it is on everything listed above.

Actually I have one is how to make a pattern from your old clothes, and I love it. Its packed with me moving, if you will remind me somewhere between mid may and end of may I can tell you the title name and maybe get on at a discount somewhere like amazon.
