I love making home made lye soap, but am having a problem buying the lye for the recipe. Does anyone have any suggestions where I can purchase a few cans of lye. Someone told me that they took the Red Devil Lye off the market because of terrorist activity. I am not a terrorist..just a farm wife who makes soap! Thanks..marti |

Don't use Draino. It is not 100% lye.

Naw, our store is still selling Red Devil Lye. It's a part of the Rosaurs (sp?) chain. A book said to not use drano, but apparently, the dry form of drano is SIMPLY the equivalent to the best lye out there! I mean, all it is is lye in the purest form. Or, if you have a fireplace that you use, you can make it out of ash :)

It is probably against postal regulations to send lye by mail -- it would be considered hazardous/corrosive, I believe. You may want to check with your local post office before making the decision to send. (Mail order retail stores may have different regulations.) |

I was at one of our local stores yesterday and they had about 10 containers of Red Devil on the shelf. It was $4.89 each. If anyone wants me to get some and send it let me know. So far the stores here seem to still have a supply.
I'm still hot...it just comes in flashes. |

Sometimes online soap making suppliers have lye. I know here we get to know other people who make soap and swap ingrediants. Sometimes places that sell to the organic community have lye but you have to ask. We lost our supply store a couple of years ago and it broke my heart because I could buy the lye in bulk there on top of lots of other supplies.

Lye is being used in meth production so they are really cracking down on it. If you buy a lot you will likely be questioned.

I called Red Devil last week and they have stopped making the lye. So whatever you can find you should probably snatch up. Although I'm wondering if a person goes in and buys a bunch at once if it will be questioned.

You can look under Chemicals in the yellow pages. I buy my lye directly from the manufacturer. They usually need only 24 hours notice to make it for me.

Just yesterday I saw Red Devil Lye in the close-out basket at the supermarket. Was tempted to purchase, even though I don't make soap!, just because others on this site have talked about the difficulty of finding lye. This was at my Jewel food store, which is part of Albertson's. I'd make a beeline for your market or maybe hardware store (Ace?) and stock up. (I even thought of buying up those cans of lye and use them in bartering here, but I think it's a no-no to ship lye?) |
