Just wondered if any of you have done any cleansing programs that help your liver, kidneys, gallbladder and such? I've been doing alot of reading about different ones lately. Most sound extreme, but there are options out there that are less extreme. I'm doing it for health reasons and to facilitate weight loss, which doesn't happen if your organs are stressed and clogged up, so to speak.

I've read about a lemonade cleansing program called Master Cleanse that I'm starting today. It seems less harsh. It involves drinking distilled/filtered water with 2 Tbsp lemon juice, 2 Tbsp real maple syrup and a dash of cayenne pepper. I couldn't find cayenne at my store so I'm using regular pepper. You drink this mixture anywhere from 6 - 12 times per day. It takes the stress off your organs so they can cleanse themselves and since it is a combination that is complete dietary wise, it sustains. So far I'm just having a headache.... got to get over that feeling then proceed. Everything I've read says people develop incredible energy bursts. There are more details that I haven't covered here, but overall it's a simple plan.

So any other farmgirls out there exploring natural health options?

I think I would try something other than maple syrup. Perhaps barley malt or Rice syrup. They keep your blood sugar more level. Honey or Maple syrup, though natural, don't function a whole lot differently than refined white sugar. The headache, I would say, is the withdrawel from refined foods kicking in. Its not a whole lot different than coming off of an addicting drug. Drink LOTS of water to flush the ickies out.

I've only done cleansing with herbs -- never a fast or anything like that. I know that after about 48 hours I started to feel pretty lousy -- kind of like having the flu. It was just from all the toxins in my body being flushed out. Drinking fruit and vegetable juices helped, especially lemon juice in water.

Well, girls, here's my update. I made it through the weekend with the majority of my intake being only fresh lemon juice water with only 1 tablespoon of real maple syrup. (2 tbps spiked my blood sugar and gave me a headache!).... But come Monday, back at work, stress and all, major headache I had to eat something (I think the headache was part of the major detox kicking in at 3 days)... so defeat. I've decided that what I'll try is to do it on most of my weekends, and maybe alternate with freshly juiced fruits and veges and broths. I know that's not as beneficial, but at this point anything helps. Still eating only healthful foods in between, and beginning each day with a glass of fresh lemon juice water, followed by a glass of tomato juice, which is part of the "healthy liver" approach.

I've never tried a fast or cleansing routine but there must be something to it. Many years ago, I had to have a lower GI done (turned out nothing was wrong, except the stress at work was getting to me). Three days prior to the test, I had to stop eating solid food, which pretty much eliminated processed foods, sugar, meat, etc. The 2nd day I could only have clear liquids (clear broth, water, tea, only juice you could see through); day before the test I could only have water. After the test, I felt as though my entire body had been washed inside out. For about 6 months after that I ate only healthy foods - no meat, no processed foods, no sugar, etc. I felt fabulous. Eventually life got in the way and I couldn't keep it up. I am now in the process of going back to that kind of eating, but it's difficult because now I have a family to contend with, and the DH and son are carnivores, not to mention the sweet tooth. But knowing how I felt back then gives me the incentive to keep going with the plan.

I've done the lemonaid cleanse for 10 days and it helped tremendously with both a physical and mental clearing that I needed.

It was hard the first 3 days, I'm telling you, food was SCREAMING my name and I couldn't cook the meal or sit at the table while my family was eating. I had to be sure those few days that I drank every couple of hours and didn't wait until my tummy was rumbling.

After 10 days, it says you can do up to 30, I felt I was where I wanted to be and so I stopped. Do be careful when you start eating and use the program that he recommends or you can make yourself severly sick. I did the soup for 2 days and then couldn't stand it and had a meal, didn't eat a whole lot but it was to much and of the "wrong" stuff.

Since then I've tried to do it again and I just cannot make myself drink it, just the smell makes me gag and I have to pour it out. I'd like to find something else to do in it's place but so far haven't found it.

Once in a while the dream comes true,
And the whole pattern of life is altered,

I do a juice fast periodically. It seems to help. The biggest problem for me is the associated headaches -- think it's a blood sugar issue.

Of course, I've been popping headache meds the last two days like candy, but that's more a function of divorce mediation ... :(

I have been reading on healthier lifestyles and such. My husband has Hep C and his liver doctor said to eat as natural as possible-no processed foods and to absolutely stay away from margarine-it can cause liver damage by itself-he said to eat real butter. Lemon juice helps to detoxify the liver and makes it's job easier. Just having some lemon juice squeezed into some water and drink once daily will help. Also. I went to a seminar at church on eating. From the ground, from the plants, from the trees is mostly what we should be eating. The speaker applied biblical eating habits, which are much more healthier for us. Fasting gives your body abreak-which helps it tremedously. Also I have read a book by a chiropractic neurologist who talks about the same thing-all natural-if you are interested I will get you the book title and author.

I have been looking into a fasting program too, it requires 5 days to go through the whole thing and it seems to be gentle.
Day one you begin preparing your body by eliminating meat, dairy, wheat, salt, sugar, caffine, alcohol, and and other processed foods from your diet.
Day two and three fruit, vegetables and plain unsweetened yogurt are okay. Drinking water, teas and fruit or vegetable juices.
Day four is that fast, drinking only the water, teas or fruit and/or vegetable juices. Spend day resting and meditating.
Day five is gradually working your way out of your fast eating things such as rice, yogurt, fruit and vegetables. Eat as healthily as possible from that point on for at least a week for the most energy.

I've heard different things about "detoxing" ones body with things like that. The lemonade cleansing thing does sound interesting and safe, definitely let us know how you feel after doing it. How many days do you do it?

Hi Clare, I havent done any cleansing program to speak of other then fasting. I drank just water for almost 4 days. I have problems with my pancreas, almost died 3 years ago when a gallstone was lodged and wouldnt move. I have to be very careful with what I eat. It flares up from time to time & diet & exercise are extremely important. I try not to take anything that isnt natural if I can help it. You are right to say alot of the programs seem very harsh and a friend who is a naturalist said sometimes these programs, if not careful, can put more of a strain on our bodies. You are a very intelligent woman and you wouldnt do just any program without researching it so good luck with it, let me know how it goes. Michele
