I just returned from my doctor - had blood tests a few weeks ago to figure out why I'm feeling so lousy...

I suspected I had iron deficiency and he suspected I had Vitamin B12 deficiency... but both of us were surprised when in addition to those two, I also have a Vitamin D(3) deficiency!

Everything I have read says that your body can make enough vitamin D if you have just 15 minutes of sun exposure a day -- Yikes, it must have been a long winter! I know I spend a lot of time indoors at work but surely I am getting 15 minutes a day??? I know I don't get enough dairy products as I am lactose intolerant, and have tended to avoid them instead of paying the higher price for lactose-free products.

I can't wait for spring to arrive here (and maybe Daylight Savings time tomorrow!) so I can get some more time outdoors....

LOL Brenda. Florida sounds great to me! The last time I was there (around 1999) I actually got what some people refer to as a SUN TAN!!! My skin won't tan this far north. It did when I was little, but once I hit puberty, NOTHING!
I realized that tanning has become a bad word, but in moderation, like all things, I believe exposure to the sun is healthy. You don't have to bake in it, just be outside a bit...

Robin, somewhere I read that there is a spot on your forehead that is the "sweet spot" (the third eye?) for converting sunlight to Vitamin D, so the arms being exposed might not matter as much... I don't know if that is fact or fallacy, though - you know how reliable information you find on the internet is!

I have bangs that cover my forehead! If it's very cold I wear a hat with the brim over my forehead. There's not much hope of my forehead being exposed.

Some of the research I am doing says that Vitamin D helps to maintain normal weight... Ha! Now I have another excuse!

Jana, I wonder what the magic latitude line where the 15 minutes a day kicks in? (Is my plan to retire to Michigan a good one, or will we have to get a winter home in Florida?)

Kati, some of the information I found also says that Vitamin D deficiency can lead to depression, so your observation that it keeps you cheerful could be right on target.

Weirdly enough, my cholesterol is excellent, even though I eat eggs every morning for breakfast, and my blood pressure is very healthy. I attribute it to my use of olive oil and grapeseed oil for cooking. I bought some Flax oil at the health food store for the Omega 3's but I rarely use it - (it reminds me too much of the linseed oil I used for furniture finishing!)

Brenda, last fall when I was visiting my doc he told me that we just don't live at a latitude where your body can make enough vitamin D to stay healthy. The sun's rays are just not intense enough. I take a multi-vitamin, vitamin D, omega-3 fish oil and glucosamine sulfate. The omega-3 has certainly helped normalize my good and bad cholesterol and the glucosamine helps with my sore joints and fibromyalgia.

I've been reading a lot about vitamin D, too! I take cod liver oil all winter because it has omega 3 as well as vitamin D. It also has vitamin A, but in the research I've done, if you take natural vitamin A and D together (and at the same time), the D prevents you from having a toxic buildup of A. I've noticed it's really kept me cheerful despite the clouds! =o)

I take vitamin D all winter. Unless I can go out out in the winter with bare arms I don't get enough sunlight on my skin. It's just now getting warm enough to be sleeveless if the wind isn't blowing. It can make for a long winter.
