That doesn't use Borax? Just got on the net to research Borax and it says it should not be used around children, especially infants and toddlers or women who are of child-bearing age.

Anyone have a "safer" recipe for laundry soap?

Hmmm...thought I might have a recipe for laundry soap, as in making the actual soap from scratch, but that recipe also has borax added to it. Not sure why. Ivory soap flakes stopped being produced in the 70s and thats what I grew up on. I'm not sold on detergents at all! When I have a really bad stain to get out, I use a bar of Dr. Bronner's and a nail brush to scrub it out before washing it. I have never used the liquid soap as a laundry soap, but that might be an option. It won't suds like a detergent, but the sudsing is just additives anyway.

I didn't find any online, but I did find a lot of comments on various other forums that say you can just leave the borax out, especially if the recipe uses other cleaning agents like washing soda.

I second what Jenny said. I scoured the internet fo ryou too, for I AM the Google queen here.....not found a single one yet w/o borax. I have used borax fro years for a lot of cleaning needs and we have yet to have any problem. Like all cleaning products, use the same caution you would with window cleaner (if you use commercial window cleaner) and keep out of reach of children....check your local poison control to se eif they can send you some Mr. YUCK stickers. We have them on everything from baking soda to borax to vinegar just so the girls KNOW that they are not to touch. I remembered Mr. YUCK from when I was a kid, so they DO work! I'd give that a shot.

The main thing you don't want with Borax is to ingest it, or breathe it. You don't really do that with laundry soap, so you should be ok- if you don't find one without Borax. As long as you take care not to inhale it when you're making the laundry soap.

Countryside had a recipe in it this issue (p.96, March/April 2007), which just came in today, but it contains borax.

Borax is fairly toxic, but I wouldn't worry about using it on your laundry. Unfortunately, I can't help you out with a recipe either.

I wish I had a recipe for you, sorry.
Actually I would love to learn one as well. I am new to farming things and am trying several things for the first time.
Things that I will be trying are...
Laundry Soap
Washing Soap
Shampoo
Cheese (I already make the butter ~ YUMMY!)
Cleaning Supplies
These are just a few of the things I am looking forward to trying, so if there are any recipes out there, I would love to see them...
