Posted - Feb 22 2017 : 09:25:38 AM I have a cold and I normally take over the counter drugs but I was hoping to try some home remedies this time. Does anyone have any remedies that they like to use?

Shannon, what herbs do you put in your elderberry syrup? It's on my list to make this year.

Posted - Feb 24 2017 : 10:53:02 AM Kiersten, Vitacost.com does sell elderberry in various forms. So far, they have the best price that I've found. Good luck finding something that helps you get better!

Posted - Feb 24 2017 : 08:56:38 AM The warm water with lemon and cayenne pepper has seemed to loosen things up. I don't feel as congested as I did yesterday. I'm drinking some pepperment tea right now. It's my day off work so I can actually rest and try to get better. Going to try the onion tricks because I am actually interested to see if it actually works!

Posted - Feb 24 2017 : 07:09:03 AM Oh how I LOVE this thread!!! We make our own elderberry syrup, full of herbs, as well as take an echinacea tincture that we make. Then the rest depends on our symptoms. If breathing is an issue, eucalyptus leaves steeped in hot water and breathing in the steam helps. Also, we use GOOT - which is where you mix equal amounts of coconut oil, olive oil, and garlic, and put it either on our chests or bottom of our feet (I always put socks on after I put it on my feet! Yarrow, as well as peppermint oil, is great for reducing fevers IF they get too high... I won't use them unless I am over 102. Mullein steam or tea is great for a cough as well. We have also put half an onion in the room with the "sickie." Not sure if that really works, but it certainly doesn't hurt!

Posted - Feb 24 2017 : 06:45:34 AM I've also put a cut onion in a bowl next to the "sickie" in my family. In the bedroom or living room or wherever they are spending the most time. It's crazy, but it seems to pull the germs out somehow. We've also put cut slices of onion on our feet with socks overnight to help pull it out.

Posted - Feb 24 2017 : 06:13:09 AM I'll have to try that! I actually do like onions a lot. That does seem like a strange remedy but I'm curious so I'm going to give it a try for lunch.

Posted - Feb 23 2017 : 9:11:39 PM Kiersten, this is going to sound crazy, but my grandmother SWORE by onion and butter sandwiches... She would slather her bread with a nice, thick layer of butter, then layer on (pile on) whole-slices of thickly sliced raw onions (not individual rings, the whole slice). She then would "enjoy" it with a chaser of hot tea with a little honey and a little brandy (never too much, though - Grandma was, as she put it, "NOT a drinker!!!"). I'm not kidding you - it worked for her and my grandpa! My stomach just couldn't handle it, all the raw onion really made my stomach hurt; but she would have just one sandwich and in no time she was FINE. I'll never forget it as long as I live! Good luck with whatever you try - I hope you feel better soon! Hugs - Nini

Posted - Feb 23 2017 : 7:29:23 PM Thank you for all the tips! I'm not sure where to find elderberry but I know there is natural goods store in a neighboring town so I might check that place out. I am drinking a mug of warm water, cayenne, and lemon right now. Boy did it clear my nose instantly! I'll let y'all know how I feel tomorrow.

Posted - Feb 23 2017 : 2:41:40 PM I prefer chewable elderberry tablets. I tend to get the syrup all over the place. Yogi's cold season tea is excellent and fresh lemon in hot water with honey is also very soothing. Hope you feel better soon!

Posted - Feb 23 2017 : 08:56:39 AM If you have an oil diffuser, you can diffuse eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and tea tree oils. Peppermint is also good. I cannot use the Thieves oil as it has rosemary in it (I have a HUGE allergy) so I kind of make my own. You could also just steam these on the stove in simmering water - used dried lavender, lemon slices and dried eucalyptus.

Posted - Feb 22 2017 : 11:40:41 AM Hi Kiersten...
I have a southwestern tip if you have congestion with your cold. Salsa! You don't need the super hot kind. Just a little hot should do. Tomatoes and onions in the salsa gives a lot of vitamin C. The onions help loosen congestion. Any time I get a cough cold I eat salsa and chips.

Posted - Feb 22 2017 : 10:15:12 AM I totally understand that! I can't remember the last time I bought ANYTHING from a drugstore or pharmacy! My results are so much better naturally than over the counter! I still will go to a dr. on post if it gets TOO BAD! ;) Feel better soon!

Posted - Feb 22 2017 : 09:56:03 AM Thank you. I will try your suggestions. My mom calls me the walking pharmacy but MJF has inspired me to try and be more natural so I 'm cutting back on over the counter remedies. I do have to work a short five hour shift tonight but then I can rest. Hopefully I can knock this cold out quick because I do not have time to be sick!

Posted - Feb 22 2017 : 09:40:03 AM Sorry to hear you are not feeling well Kierston!! My daughter was brought home by her father from an extended weekend away and he brought her home FULL of stuffiness and cold! I immediately began warm water with fresh lemon and cayenne for sinus drainage, halos/clementines for her Vitamin C flush, garlic bone broth...you can do vegetable broth also with yummy fresh garlic.... and ginger tea. I also give her a teaspoon of black elderberry and two days later she is almost back to her healthy self!!! I try as natural as I can and it truly works! All the best and rapid healing prayers sent your way!
