I am on a second course of antibiotics (cipro) for recurrent bladder infections. Can you take acidophilus (not sure about the spelling) with antibiotics to prevent yeast infections?

As for the bladder infections, I drink cranberry juice sweetened with splenda, take cranberry pills, drink no caffeine or sugar and I still get plenty of bladder infections. I just don't understand. My doctor said alot of women are just like me and get recurrent urinary tract infections.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Blessed are those who love the soil,

Patsy

argh cipro.... I was on that last winter for a bladder infection. I had a severe allergic reaction with anaphalactic shock. Try anything natural first. I tried the cranberry thing and that didn't work for me. Yeah the vinegar helps. I think it also depends on how far along it is. Mine was going towards my kidneys. Good luck! :)

I have read that taking a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar is supposed to help with a UTI. I even had my 12 year old try this recently. She felt she had one... or gave the symptoms of one & had her try that. She really didn't want to do it because of the smell, but she has been taking it a few days & is feeling much better. You can also eat yogurt to help supply some of the acidophilus.
Hope you get to feeling better.

My youngest had recurring bladder infections when she was small. They sent her to a urologist who dilated the urethra under anesthetic and she never had another infection.
This is the same daughter who broke her leg on a trampoline and spent 9 months in an Ilizarov frame. The last couple months of the procedure we battled infection in pin sites which required several courses of IV antibiotics. Pro-biotics were a godsend. Antibiotics kill friendly bacteria (ask anyone who gets a yeast infection!), but also the good bacteria in the gut and bowels. We used acidophilus combined with bacillus (sp?). It kept her "plumbing" working properly.

Patsy, when my stepdaughter was much younger she had a problem with recurrent UTI's. The problem seemed to stem from a weakness in the urethra tubes/openings (?spelling) - it was allowing a reflux of urine back into the bladder. Sorry to get so specific ;-) but, I don't know that I would accept a doctor's diagnosis of "oh well, that's just what happens". Maybe try a google search for holistic/alternative therapies for recurrent UTI.

YES!! You most definately want to take acidophilus while you are on the antibiotic, AND more importantly for at least 2 weeks after your course of meds.
Go to the health food and get a high quality pro-biotic with more than 1 strain of live cultures...you will be glad you did!

I have the tendancy to get UTIs, and drinking tons of water is the only thing that helps. Sometimes I can feel one coming on and I will drink like a gallon of water that day!
BTW~you can drink any juice with a high acid content, so trade off if you are getting tired of the cranberry..
