Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to share a great book I just discovered called Body-For-Life for WOMEN!!! It's written by Dr. Pamela Peeke and really is just for women, adressing the phases of our lives from the pre-teen, reproductive years, and from peri-menopausal to post menopausal years and how to best tackle weight loss during those phases. I am thrilled with it, since I am peri-menopausal and if I look at food it jumps on my body. For the past few years I have struggled with an extra unwanted 30 lbs or so, and trying to remove it sometimes makes me feel like Sisyphus pushing an ever growing rock up a hill (me being the rock, I guess!) I have found, though, that if I exercise and eat as much organic produce as I can find, plus drinking lots of good water I feel so much better about myself.

In any case, just thought I'd share that and see if you all have any other healthy tips and things that have worked for you.

Other than that - I love this time of my life. I love being in my late forties, nearing menopause, and really looking forward to the revered "crone" stage of life. I have lots of friends who are already in their fiftes and older and I absolutely love hearing all their wisdoms.

I would love to hear your stories and wisdoms, too!

Thanks!

Vitamin B is great, so is vitamin E...I am 49 and my periods are still pretty regular. B complex is what I take.

Goodmojo. When I was in my fourties I thought I was also going through early menopause. A friend told me that if I take a good vitamin "B" supplement that my periods would once again regulate themselves. She said that sometimes as we age we need to get more pantothenic acid. I tried it and everything straightened right out. I went through menopause this year without a hitch. I am now 54. My periods just stopped.

Hi Cecelia! Thanks for your response. I am 47 and I am certain I am going through early menopause - I have all the symptoms. I find, though, that I am much better if I exercise, and of course, watch what I eat. I am trying to remove about 30 pounds. It comes off so much slower than it used to. Sigh! Like you, I am better off with a high quality protein at each meal.

I saw that book advertised and looked at it last week; I didn't buy it (may get it from the library and then read it), because I really didn't see anything new in it. Dr. Peeke has other books out that I have, and some of her advice I have followed (cut out white foods, etc.). I too am trying to lose about 20 lbs., and it is a struggle (I am over 55 under 60).
I have found that the key for myself is portion control, and eating as close to a natural diet as possible. This means, less red meat, processed foods, baked goods (even homemade), anything made with white flour, sugars, etc. inc. most cereals). I thought for awhile that a good breakfast of oatmeal, cheerios or a similar natural food would work, but I have found that if I eat that at, say 7 am, by 10 am I am starving. If I eat an egg at 7 am, with fruit and whole grain bread, I am not hungry until noon. Same goes for low fat cottage cheese with fruit (whole fruit, not jam ), and tea, I also don't get hungry until lunch. I think the key for me has been protein, "good" carbs, and whole food/grain - and portion control. You have to experiment and find what works for you. By the way - I went through menopause at 50, with no hot flashes at all. The only problem has been a gradual weight gain, which I attribute to a change in lifestyle (marriage), and a subsequent change in diet!
