Since moving to mountain climate I've had a constant problem with my scalp. I thought it was due to pregnancy, but even after baby was born my scalp has been very dry and flaky. Similar to dandruff, but its just super-duper dry. I also used to use Aveda on my hair, but had to quit due to it having gluten in it. I can't use anything with wheat and/or gluten in it (even the vitamin E can't be from wheat).

What do you use for long hair and dry scalp? I've been doing coconut oil and olive oil treatments on my scalp and neither has helped. I even got pure Argan oil to no avail. I wash every 3 days or so to not further dry it out.

Oddly enough, I don't have a problem with dry hair as it isn't static. My only problem is a super dry scalp.

I had a friend recommend a shampoo bar from Swansons. Any one use that?

Help would be so appreciated to banish the dry scalp!

Glad that it is working well for you. I absolutely love using Shea Moisture.

Just wanted to update. The store here was sold out of the Yes! To Carrots but they had Shea Moisture. I got both the shampoo and conditioner and WOW!!! My hair stopped falling out! My scalp is healing up and the thin spots where I had a lot of hair loss is growing back in!!! I've used it for almost a week now. What a difference, thank you so much for recommendations! What a blessing to see my scalp healing after a year of issues!!!!!!

Shannon: Yes, that has been my problem as well, nursing to pregnant! This time I am sincerely hoping to get a cleanse done before that happens though. If only I can have a month between anyways! I'm almost done with my first Whole30 and going to do another one starting January 1st. I'm also going to do a vegan option this time so my body can build up proper enzymes before reintroducing meat and eggs. I'm hoping that will help with my skin and scalp problems too.
Rachel: I will add that to my list of things to try also, thank you!!! Its interesting that you don't have to use it every day- I would LOVE that!!!

The shampoo that works best for me is by Shea Moisture, found at Walgreen's. That has worked so much better for my scalp (and hair, but my main problem is scalp issues from psoriasis) than anything else I have ever tried and these days I don't have to use it every day nor do I have to use as much conditioner as I used to.

Nursing is SUCH a blessing, yet can make life more... errrr..... interesting :) I am still nursing my youngest (almost 18 mo) and will continue until she is at least two (unless she decides otherwise, sooner). If you are interested in it, I know you can do Full GAPS while nursing. But if it is a candida issue, I would suggest a good probiotic, cut out the grains (you can still bake and cook with coconut and almond flours), and yes watch the sugars, trying to switch to honey instead (preferably raw). I have never been able to do a cleanse, as I always go straight from nursing to pregnant. You may also want to try rinsing with unfiltered apple cider vinegar.

Shannon, that is interesting you mention that as I do have celiac but I also have DH which is celiac manifested in the skin as well. A few other people have suggested to be watchful of candida overgrowth as well. Since I'm nursing I'm just limiting empty carbs and watching my sugar/sweets intake until I wean next year, then I plan on doing another Whole30 and candida cleanse. Nicole, I will check out that shampoo, I think Target carries it, so it will be easy enough to try it out next time I get to the city! Lisa, I will check out that as well, although, it is easier for me to buy things in store vs. online (but I will check it out, I'd love for something to work so I'm willing to try just about anything at this point! A year is WAY to long!). Thanks all for the leads, I'll got on that this week!

Ktystal, In my "Nicole's Picks" column for MaryJane's sisterhood newsletter, I recommended a shampoo that is pretty widely available. My husband has battled dandruff his whole life, as well as has psoriasis and a sensitivity to coconut oil, which is often in natural products. He has had great results with the shampoo, "Yes to Carrots Scalp Relief" shampoo. Their products are gluten free and it also has fruit acids and tea tree oil.

Good luck!

Krystle, I would try Wen. See my post on the topic below titled Wen

I have found for us, it is often due to a candida overgrowth, which with "leaky gut," celiacs, Crohn's, colitis, and other intestinal issues (I am assuming with your needing to stay away from gluten, you have some type of intestinal issue), can be quite common. Along with oil treatments, we use a tea tree oil shampoo, and rinse with apple cider vinegar.
