So me and two of my daughters have celiac and we found out near the end of August. We found that out due to my continuing health problems going on for a year now (two weeks after we moved here). Anyway long story short, we recently moved about 10 miles south of where we had lived since moving here last year, my symptoms changed and got worse since the move "south". Going gluten free got rid of that celiac rash but then we realized I had something else going on as well. The "rash" now looked like a chemical rash, itched and burned like crazy. Well two weeks ago my face swelled up like a balloon and we went in and the Doctor immediately thought it was an allergic reaction to antibiotics. I haven't been on antibiotics since the birth of my last child in May! So they give me the steroid routine and it slowly went down and stopped the redness but two days after stopping the steroids that "rash" was back with a vengence. Last weekend multiple people suggested to me that it is the pesticides used here. I did some research and found out that two of the three antibiotics that I am severely allergic to are sprayed HEAVILY here! No wonder I've been sick since we moved here!!!! Oh my goodness. I have to be 100% organic and considering going to all organic clothing and household items too. This is serious business. I move to a supposedly super clean state and have had miserable health problems due to their antibiotic as pesticide use!! Ugh!!!! So now we HAVE to move somewhere before spring thaw. I had no idea that pesticides can make you so sick and you can have an allergic reaction to a pesticide and not the food. So sad. Just wanted to share that and if anyone has any advice making the complete switch to organic, I'd love to hear it! Also, I need to relearn how to cook gluten free as well, as well as garden in this high mountain elevation. I used to garden with my eyes closed in the Midwest but everything is so new here! Thanks for any advice:)

I truly feel for you! It is a shame that there really is not anywhere safe in the US to live that is away from pesticides and other chemicals. Since moving away from the heavy commercial farming areas of south GA to the mountains, my family's health has improved, but we still have work to do. I am also researching and learning about going gluten free and getting away from modern wheat products. I shared a couple of links on this thread http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=67353 to a place that has heritage wheat seeds and flours for sale (and it is in the US, which I like) that I will be ordering from soon. I am trying to decide what to do with the flours that I currently have in my pantry as I am able to replace them with healthier flours. I do recommend the book "Wheat Belly" and the "Wheat Belly Cookbook" they have some really good info and recipes in them. Being "sensitive" to chemicals on the one hand is a good thing because if you listen to what your body is telling you, you can know what to avoid and find healthier alternatives, but at the same time it sucks because these chemicals are everywhere, hard to avoid, and cause so many health problems.

Several years ago, I worked at a nursing home on night shift and that is when the guys would come in to strip and wax the floors. I started having alot of health problems and noticed that many of the residents had worsening symptoms (mostly those with COPD, but others too) when the floors were done. I brought this up to management, and even went so far as to research healthier options for the chemicals used but I was told that if I didn't like it, I should find another job, so I did, but I still feel really bad for the residents there who have no way to avoid that exposure. I still have health problems that I believe are directly related to the chemical exposure and it sucks. I do not think that it is right that everyone has to face exposure to all of these various chemicals and pesticides with no say in the matter at all. I do vote with my dollars and purchase as much as I can that is organic, eco-friendly, etc but it still is not right that as much as I try to avoid these contaminants, they find me anyway.
