Posted - Nov 14 2014 : 09:01:17 AM Hi girls -
I am really feeling ill about this one...
Apparently, it's not the gluten in wheat that's making people sick... And our wheat isn't secretly GMO... It's the way (some?) farmers are harvesting the wheat... By drenching the wheat fields with Round Up a few days before it is harvested... The wheat plants die and wither, thus becoming much easier for the combine harvesters and allowing for an easier and earlier harvest...
If you don't know about this, you just have to read about it:
http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/real-reason-for-toxic-wheat-its-not-gluten/
Is this really how it's done? They can't/don't do this with organic wheat, can/do they? If it says non-GMO, that really doesn't mean anything in light of this, does it?!
Please, PLEASE share what you know with all of us! This is just... just... just... <gulp> INJUSTICE! INSIDIOUS!!! Think about all aspects of life and nature this process affects. Absolutely devastating.
Ugh... I really think I'm going to be ill.
Hugs,
Nini

Posted - Nov 16 2014 : 03:21:30 AM Linda - I too thought it was extreme, which is why I put "informed" in quotation marks.... But had I heard about the use of round up, elsewhere, I would have thought that was extreme as well. I guess my overall point, though, was that we really don't know the extremes commercial farmers will go, or a expected to go. The state things are in is heartbreaking, but are probably only going to get worse! I need to spend more time in prayer with our Creator, that He. Directs us to healthy options, protects us from the harm, and quite honestly, calms the anxieties caused by the "craziness."

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 5:01:00 PM Shannon, That sounds a bit extreme? But honestly, not much surprises me anymore honestly!! Gosh I hope what you heard was incorrect :(
Hopefully the more people are aware the more there can come about change for the better! Blessings, Linda

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 09:21:19 AM Nini - I think what it boils down to, is none of us really know for certain one way or the other, of whether it is true or not. With everything else going on (GMOs, hybrids, etc), I would say it is quite likely, but all of us are pretty clueless on where our food really comes from and HOW it is truly grown, processed, etc. I was actually "informed" the other day that if Monsanto or one of his people passes a field not theirs, they will find out if it is sprayed and will spray it if not, so that you cannot continue to produce your own food. True? I dunno. but it certainly could be!
As for "Wheat Belly" - I have it on my bookshelf and STILL have not read it. I really need to!

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 08:24:20 AM You know, Linda... I'm starting to think the cost of buying expensive healthy products costs much less and much more cost-effective in the long run, as opposed to all the medical bills that follow the purchase of lesser quality foods. I am definitely looking into purchasing organic wheat berries in bulk - I think you're dead on with that! But the concern is that there are so many chemicals used in farming here in the US that we really can't escape them, even on organically produced products. Even though I maintain organic practices here at home, we only live a couple of miles from a dear friend's family farm. They spray early, early in the morning in the summer, and some days you can even smell it in the air. They have told me that it dissipates and doesn't affect areas surrounding the farm, and that's a nice thought, but my nose tells me otherwise. Then again, it seems the insects - good and bad - really enjoy my garden most over everyone else's in the neighborhood! LOL! You're right, though, we just have the best we are able. Every step towards good is a step away from bad, right? :)
Rachel... I really, really have to read that book! It has been on my "to read" list forever. Seems between required reading for my son's homeschool program, and all the other books of necessity and interest that pop up during the year, that remains static on my list. This has to change! I'm going to have to buy it and keep in on my nightstand so I don't forget! :) Thank you so much for the links about the Einkorn wheat - I will definitely check them out! AWESOME!
I honestly was hoping someone would say that this article has it all wrong. That's not happening. So disheartening!

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 08:06:51 AM I've been reading "Wheat Belly" and it has some interesting information in it about wheat, mainly focusing on gluten. However, the author also talks about the Einkorn wheat and how much better it is than modern wheat. http://growseed.org/einkorn.html and http://growseed.org/seed.html has information on buying seeds, growing and using this wheat. I didn't know that wheat fields are dowsed with Roundup prior to harvest until I read this article and I find that very interesting and quite disturbing. Talk about bio/chemical warfare.

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 07:41:30 AM Another thought..... Many years back my daughter had some pancakes and breads made by her friends mom.....she was just a kid at the time. This mom bought organic wheat berries and ground her own flour. My daughter said those pancakes were the best she had ever had!! She was just a kid at the time, and she noticed a huge difference in taste/texture. We process and ship so far anymore that things just aren't the same :( Especially here, it's true that many other countries do not allow the additives, preservatives and pesticides that we do.
I know in health food stores you can purchase wheat berries.......might be too cost prohibitive to make things with amounts needed tho. Never mind the wheat grinder machines. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions for us?

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 06:43:02 AM All of this saddens me so very much........ Most of us try to do the best we can and as healthy as we can. It's so very frustrating anymore! Between Monsanto and the Koch brothers , it almost seems as tho our voices can't be heard anymore!! I sign petitions as well and post on fb. It just doesn't seem to be enough .
As best we are able.......try and grow our own stuff. That's not always possible for so many.

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 06:16:19 AM I actually started looking into buying that wheat she recommended. I also saw online that you can buy that same organic wheat in bulk, but I think the reason she buys the one she does is because it is grown in Italy, where no pesticides are used???
Want to hear the really GROSS thing I thought about last night as I was reading this to my husband? A few years back I had read a book that suggested putting flour around the base of your plants to get rid of slugs. It gets on their skin and suffocates them, they die, no more slugs. Well, I have done this now almost every season since. My beautiful, organic garden may not be organic!!!! And what is killing the slugs, actually - are they being suffocated, or are we unknowingly poisoning them with Round-Up?! I have to call the college where we buy our flour (grown locally and ground by monks). I just need to know the deal with the wheat they use. I suspect they do not use pesticides, because we have had a few weevil incidents upon opening the bags, but that may not mean a dang thing. Right now, I am just so upset about all of this. We will use the flour we have stored, either way, but after that I'm definitely going to exclusively grind my own wheat, and probably the one recommended in this article, unless someone else can suggest a healthy, home-grown alternative, of course!
We have a really REALLY small lot, and our garden is sufficient for our little family, but still very small. I wonder if growing our own wheat in another section of the yard would be worth it to us at all? Anything thoughts? I had planned to use it as an over-winter cover crop, but didn't do that since we received all those wood chips last summer... Maybe I should re-think the whole thing and do another exclusive planting elsewhere next year. What do you think?
I've got to do more research on all of this, really. I just can't get over it. Ugh... Well, I suppose the best we can do is the best we can do. :)

Posted - Nov 15 2014 : 04:30:45 AM So, so sad that this is where we are. After everything they know about pesticides, it is STILL best practice to use them, not only use them but abuse them at the expense of peoples health! Nini, I don't even know what to say about this, sitting here shaking my head on this one. Thinking that even if you were to buy organic wheat flour for bread making (which I do) at bulk food stores, who knows how they harvested the crop ...

Posted - Nov 14 2014 : 6:08:03 PM WOW! I am appalled! And I too am feeling ill! To think of what this is doing to our bodies and our children's bodies! Why doesn't this kind of thing make it on all the headlines in the news!?!?

Posted - Nov 14 2014 : 10:02:58 AM I've been signing petitions like crazy for Home Depot and other places to stop selling the poison Round-Up. This stuff is evil and to think this is what they are putting on our wheat is sickening. How on earth these companies can get away with this is beyond me. I'll research the organic wheat and see if this horrible practice is used by them as well. I sincerely hope it isn't. Thanks Nini for bringing this to our attention. I still can't believe the states that voted against the GMO labeling bill! How people can be so lethargic about this is beyond me!
