It's been a quiet summer here for West Nile Virus, but it is starting to show up. One confirmed infected person in southern OK which is in my local TV viewing area.

Two ponds tested positive in Grayson County which is 100 miles west of me. So far no confirmed cases in my county. That means that I will continue to change water in bird bath daily and after every rain check for any standing water.

If there are confirmed cases in my county they will start spraying again. I hate to think of them having to spray because it kills insects other than mosquitos but I sure don't want a repeat of a couple of summers ago.

It seems at certain times in the evening we have them bad here. I am surrounded by woods too.

We've had mosquitoes test positive and also a few people fall ill.

I wish the natural sprays like citronella and other essential oils worked for me. They deter the critters when we're just sitting and relaxing outside. But, when I'm working and sweating, the oils don't do anything. I get so many skeeters on me that they could carry me away. I try to stay away from chemicals but, sometimes I just have to spray some deet.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

Sad to say that they predict a wet winter for us here in Florida. We are dumping out all the water containers and turning them upside down. Have not had much of a mosquito problem so far around here, just ants!

We don't see too many cases here but we do vaccinate out horses. MB

Sara , we have the same problem down here in Florida with West Nile Virus. We have had some confirmed cases already earlier in the summer plus a few deaths of horses from Equine encephalitis. With all the constant rain everyday, we have standing rain all over the city and low areas. Mosquitoes are a huge problem down here. I'll be glad when the cooler drier weather arrives and the populations die back some. Of course, they are never gone here!
