Does anyone know if crystal deodorants are harmful? I've given up on "regular," store-bought deodorant, and I've tried homemade recipes and Tom's of Maine. But nothing seems to work. I just bought a crystal deodorant (no aluminium chlorohydrate, hypoallergenic, fragrance and paraben free). The only ingredient is potassium alum.

Potassium alum is a combination of Aluminum and Potassium. It may not be dangerous to use (I don't really know, but it doesn't appeal to me) but it can be harsh if your skin is tender for any reason, like after shaving, or in the situation Rachel had (owie!!!).

When you see just "Alum" as an ingredient, its probably Ammonium Aluminum Sulfate. It's a different thing and is nontoxic. (People use it for pickling.) It's great in deodorants. I use it instead of corn starch in my homemade deodorant. If you buy it in the spice section of a grocery store, you'll pay $5 or more for just a little bottle. I get a big bag in the health food store for about $7 -- pretty much a lifetime supply. :)

I have not heard or read anything about them being harmful, from what I've read the potassium alum is a type of aluminum but isn't absorbed by the body like the aluminum used in antiperspirants (and some deodorants) because the molecules are too large for absorption. I haven't had any major problems with mine (other than the need to reapply it some days). The only time I've had an issue with the crystal was a few weeks back when I had a major yeast infection all over and it decided to manifest primarily in my armpits and the crystal made it hurt(burn)so dang bad I had to stop using anything for several days which was horrible.
