Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any tried & true hints for getting rid of lice. My 6 yr old who has very long, wavy curly blonde locks was sent home 2 weeks ago from school with lice.I used the shampoo, sprayed the bedding spray, did 30 loads of laundry in hot water. When I do a headcheck they are still there...Her sister who has straight hair did not get them, I have been pulling them out with my fingernails( they stick to the hair & scalp) but I am going crazy.
help......

The best thing I ever used was TEA TREE OIL. i DELUTED IT SLIGHTLY WHEN I FIRST STARTED USING IT ON MY GRANDDAUGHTERs AND THEN PUT IT ON FULL STRENGHT. i ALSO PUT IT IN THEIR REGULAR SHAMPOO. wE SPENT $50 ON LICE REMEdts from the drug store and it didn't do a thing.

Kathie, that is TOO cute! Thanks for sharing, and yes, I did sure laugh. I can just imagine your meltdown, though! Probably very similar to my friend...she's actually to the crying stage now, and I feel really bad for her. Lilly, her little girl, said to me on Sunday, "Miss Jonni, I have nits in my heyr (hair)"...and I explained to her that a lot of little ones get it from school...A few minutes later she said, "my daddy had to come get me from big guhl (girl) school"...and I felt so sorry for her! She missed her little graduation ceremony today because they wouldn't let her come.

On my end, I've been in and out our bathroom here at the office all darn day, turning my head inside out! Couldn't sleep last night, tossing and turning and thinking that I itch! The problem that I see for me, is that my hair goes to my waist, and though I was thinking of a haircut, I wasn't thinking of a shave, necessarily.

Botanicalbath--the pharmacist told me that it's "extra bad" this year, which sounds like it might be in your area, too. We have four dogs and 3 cats, and plenty of flea treatment...I'll make sure to spray the carpet and vacuum, because the little one's were all over the house. I guess I should do the same to my furniture--though they were largely sitting outside, and playing outside, I know they were chasing the dogs a bit around the living room.

I guess I just thought if I'm not sharing a brush with them, or living in close quarters with them I really wouldn't be susceptible...I guess we shall see!

Ok I just had this talk with my friend the vet.

Background:
There are 2 little buggie head girls in the neighborhood who always have lice... Always Always Always! The girls next door got it, and the mother treated their hair, washed everything... but couldnt get it out of hers. (The mother has OCD for cleaning) She ended up shaving her head. The neighbors across the street have 6 kids and the summer before last... 5 of the 6 kids had their head shaved... all but the oldest girl.

I HATE bugs...

Back to the vet... she said that the active ingredient in Lice shampoo is the same ingredient in flea shampoo. The trick is that you have to leave it on for 20-30 min. Easier on kids than cats. Also getting it out of your your house is the hardest. I told her that if we get it, having my head shaved is the least of my worries. She did tell me that she would personally come over and comb my hip length hair with a nit comb... she agreed that DH is not retentive enough. She also said that some flea treatment would work on the rugs and sofas... it is because the way they work is they impare the buggies from reproducing... some work on the nervous system of the bugs and basically they will be paralyzed and die of starvation. Either will work for me.

Well.. it is pretty likely that any of the kids they come in contact with are going to get it too.. they are just so close to each other..
Your's is probably naturaly that your skin is crawling.. It couldn't hurt to have someone check your head though Kiddo!!
Poor Girl!!
Funny Story..
When my kids were little My middle guy Josh was sitting there like he didn't have a care in the world whe i said everybody needed to get ready for scholl the next day.. ( he was in 1st grade..) i said "josh.. buddy come on.. get your things together" he said "nope.. i don't have school tomorrow." i said "Jeff.. No School?" jeffrey said 'YES WE DO!' Josh said " Nope. not me.. i have 'rice' so i don't have to go to School.."
I said "WHAT?" he said " I have 'rice' in my hair.. so i don't have to go to school.."
After my melt down.. I stripped that poor kids hair until it did nothing but fly away in the wind like tufts of new bown duck down!!
But The 'RICE' was ALLLLL gone!

Good Luck Jonni!
Hope that made ya laugh a litte!!

*bump*
My dear friend brought her two little ones over on Sunday, and the poor dears have lice (the 5 year old brought it home on Thursday of last week--got it from pre-school, now both she and the 3 year old have it)...they are having difficulty getting rid of it, but I have to ask: how contagious is it?
I'm feeling itchy, have been for two days, but I don't know if it's mind over matter, or that I should maybe go get a bottle of cetaphil and a nit comb!

Hi, Laura
Yes, the Cetaphil works like a charm. But you do NOT need to leave it on overnight. Put it on, use a showercap, & just leave it there for 4-6 hours. As several folks have told you, the MAIN thing is the removal of the nits. It is time consuming & tedious - now you know where the expression "nit picking" comes from! - but you absolutely have to do it, or the cycle will just continue. Once again, I urge you to visit the NPA website. Their instructions are evidence based, & are not just anecodotes. I'm also glad you contacted your Pediatrician. And the answer they gave you regarding those toxic shampoos was correct. They are both dangerous & un-necessary!!
As I mentioned to yoy previously, I am a Nurse, & volunteer @ my kids' elementary school. We have a very large committee of volunteers doing whole-school lice screenings 3-4 times a year. It really helps. If your school doesn't have such a policy, I suggest they establish one. Good Luck!

Ok- so this is not scientific and not probably the best thing for a childs hair but my daughter had lice when she was 10 and has hair to her butt. So we tried the kits etc and washed everything- no good. So here is what i did. I dyed her hair close toher natural color and that got rid of all of them. Don't know why but it worked. Nothing like harsh chemicals.

On the other hand- heard this Dr on the radio this morning and he has this stuff called Lice Freee. Its a gel you put on the entire scalp and hair- leave in for an hour- then comb out and shampoo.

I still like the hair color though- it worked excellently.

Thanks for all your suggestions! We are still dealing with the lice.. she is tired of me constantly checking her hair.. I called our pediatrition yesterday, they no longer recommend the lice shampoo (nix) there is a "nouveau" method they recommend with cetaphil cleanser a whole 12 oz. bottle massaged in the hair and left on overnight.. we will try asap.

my oilder sister had lice when we were kids hair that you could sit on. I remember my grandmother sitting there for hours with the little brush that came in the package of rid to get rid of the lice it was laborius but it worked after many days of repeating. I didn't get them from her but I was treated so just in case it wouldn't stay in the family since I had long hair to best to treat the whole family painful but a sure way to get rid of them

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe my blog http://sunshinescreations.blogspot.com

I have also had this problem with my daughter...now grown and she is dealing with this firsthand with her daughter. I agree very much with the stuffed animals in a bag for 2 wks or such. I also found that if you put the bedding in the dryer for a cycle...the heat kils living lice. Cornstarch on the carpets left there for a day or two...coated pretty heavy...will also smother them before vacuuming/ As far as the nits...you just have to pick and pick and pick....do it outside in the sun to see them better. My daughter had very very long hair when she had them years ago...good luck to you!!

As the volunteer school Nurse for my kid's elementary school, I have had lots of experience with this problem. Unfortunately, a lice infestation can be very difficult to get rid of, as you have experienced. Rather than attempt to detail all of the information here, I suggest you check out the website for the National Pediculosis Association.. It is an excellent site, & will tell you everything you need to know. Lots of free downloads, too. The most important thing to remember is that while the "ick" factor is really high, lice are not a true disease, & your daughter will be completely fine. Best of luck to you!!

The key is getting every nit out. Use the tiny comb that comes in the kit. Take small 1/4 sections of hair and comb them out. It will take hours and then do it everyday for the 7 days after the shampoo.I know it hard when the kids are young but I would put in a video and do the combing while they watch it.It helps to have the hair damp as you do it.
Also make sure you boil every comb, brush and hair clip the girls use and now that she has them again you have to do all the sheets, comforter and bedding again. All stuffed animals need to put in a bag for 10 days. Vacumm all the couches and chairs with any fabric covers. It is such a pain when they get them but if one of lice lives you will be infested again. Good luck!

Have you tried giving her a scalp rinse with lemon juice? I have heard this will kill the little suckers. Also try vinegar as it kills almost everything.
