I was wondering if any of you farm women have advice on how best to deal with ticks. I found one on my husband last night and boy was it hard to get off. I think we got it all out but can't be sure. I inspected all my kids to be safe. We do live in the country but this is our first incounter. What is the best way to deal with them and what should I be on the look out for as far as a bad reaction in my husband? Thanks in advance for your help. |

Thanks you guys. On the second day it did look like a bulls eye but it looks better now. My hubby says he plans to go in to his on the job dr but you know men...they don't really like to go have things looked at. We've been cleaning it daily but I guess I'll know what to do for next time. :)

I cover a tick that has attached itself to a human with vicks vapor rub. A glob and leave it. It smothers the tick and it will let go after a while.

If it starts to look infected--redness, drainage, pain, swelling, feverish, or streaking (red lines coming from it) definitely get that checked out. Also be aware of a bullseye/target look to it, as that will need to be seen about right away too. If you pull the tick out make sure you get the head, don't try to pull it by it's back end. If the head gets stuck, it can burrow deeper in. A natural bug spray that I use can be found at http://madameapothecary.blogspot.com/2012/12/natural-flea-spray-and-it-kills-other.html I usually will spray myself down with it when outside and it works very well. I imagine that if you had a tick already embedded, you could spray it with the bug repellant and it'd kill it and would then fall out (I haven't tried that so I can't say for sure). I would also think that since vinegar is so good at killing bugs you could put some on it but again I'm not sure as I haven't tried that either. There used to be a spray that I used years ago on horses at a stable where I worked that would make them let go and kill them, I want to say that it is a permetherin type spray--but I'm not sure how safe it would be to use on people I think it was called Tick off or tick away or something along those lines. At any rate, it worked very well with the horses.
