I have recently decided to start making a DIY version of Burts Bees lip balm that I found online at happymoneysaver.com. I have everything, just need to get the time to whip it up in the kitchen, but here's the recipe:

Burt's Bees Lip Balm Recipe Clone
Ingredients

20 grams Beeswax (about 3 Tablespoons of the whiter beads, but you can use a white/yellow bar too)
20 grams Cocoa Butter or Coconut Oil (about 2 Tablespoons)
45 grams Sunflower Oil (1/4 cup)
8 drops Vitaman E oil (4 vitamin E oil tablets worth)
2 drops DoTerra Rosemary essential oil
12 drops DoTerra Peppermint essential oil
Pea-sized drop of Lanolin
Instructions

Measure out all your ingredients except essential oils into a heat friendly cup or pan. You can use a glass dish in the microwave also.I cut open the little Vitamin E tablets and squeezed the good stuff into the cup.

Next, melt all the ingredients, and stir. The beeswax seemed to take the longest to melt, but it was all melted within a couple of minutes.

Once it's all melted add your essential oils and mix it up.

Then test it out, to make sure it has the flavor you want by letting a tiny bit cool on your finger. Rub it on your lips and check if its just right. If you feel it needs more mint or other flavorings, add more!

Then use a dropper to add the melted goodness into chapstick tubes. (If it cools too quickly before you’re done filling your tubes, just pop it in the microwave till it melts again.)

Then voila! You are done. Just let them all cool.

Hi Julia,

Here is a recipe for a Lip Gloss/Balm that a friend shared with me years ago. It works great but be forewarned: it yields ALOT :)

Lip Gloss

Ingredients:
1-cup Apricot Kernel oil, Almond Oil, or Grape seed oil (I used grape seed)
¼ cup Beeswax
1-Tablespoon Honey
Flavoring oil (this cannot be an extract because extracts are alcohol based and do not mix well with oil): optional

Optional: Alkanet Root. The root of this flower yields a coloring agent that dyes the oil to a red color. Alkanet also adds healing protection for the lips.

1)Gently heat the oil and melt the beeswax in it.
2)When the beeswax is completely melted, remove from heat and stir in honey and flavoring oil. Add enough flavoring oil to give a nice flavor. Try with a few drops first, stir, and taste.
3)When flavored correctly, take one Tablespoon of the mix and put it in the refrigerator. It will cool quickly allowing you to test the consistency before pouring into your small containers. If too hard, add more oil; if too soft, add more beeswax.
4)Pour into containers and let harden.

This recipe yields a lot. I made 12 of the tins and had some left over that I placed in 4 small Tupperware containers (condiment size). Be prepared with containers #61514;

To use Alkanet Root:

1)For each cup of oil, add 2-3 Tablespoons of alkanet. Stir over a low heat in a small pan for about 10 minutes. For a rich, red colored lip-gloss, the oil should look almost black in the pan. For a soft pink colors gloss, the oil should look a deep rich red. The color changes once it has been poured. When the desired color is reached, strain the oil through cheesecloth. Discard the herbs and return the oil to the pan.
2)Continue with steps 2-4

Check out The Herb Quarterly. They have lots of recipes for body-care products. Also different books on herbs should have recipes.
