I recently had a total hip replacement and was recovering nicely until Monday, when I dislocated it while sitting in a chair and turning to get up. This resulted in an ambulance ride to the emergency room.
Since I had the anterior approach, they told me that hip precautions were advised but not required, as they would be with a lateral approach.
Now I am afraid to move and sit in most of the chairs in my house. Any advice from anyone with experience? I don't want to do that again.

Brenda, I had total hip replacement in both my hips and I do know that it takes a long time to heal and set in. I am so afraid to go out in the winter for fear of falling on the ice and popping mine out. It seems to happen alot around here with people falling. Mine are getting better, but still have some pain. I need to walk more and strengthen up the muscles. Have to wait until we have better weather and no ice. ood luck to you and please, be careful.

The doctors and the hospital assured all of us (several patients in pre-surgery class) that the recalled hips have been removed from their inventory. But thanks for reminding me of that, it is nice of you to be concerned.
I had a doctor appointment today, he said dislocating a hip that was put in with an anterior approach like mine is very rare. About 1 in 200. Guess I was just lucky.
Wish my lottery odds were so good! I just have to be very careful now what I do with my right side, and how I twist to the left. He did say that after six months or so, scar tissue will form to hold the joint in place better. I can't wait.

Oh my gosh, Brenda! I have NO experience with this, but it sure does sound miserable! You poor thing!
Kem is right about the recall on the hip replacements... I remember my husband and I watched a program about it a couple of months ago... Please do look into it!

You may want to do research and see if there has been a recall on you artificial hip. I am not kidding. My dad had a Seltzer hip replacement probably 13 years ago. It caused him great grief. There ended up being a court case with a huge amount patients as victims. They all were awarded a cash settlement. My dad would not have gone after them, but this was a group deal and he did nothing. He did get a new hip replacement and cash for his issues from the maker of the hip parts. |
