I haven't been on the computer much lately because of increasing pain in my right thumb,
So bad i have almost no grip with my right hand. Went to the doc today and was diagnosed with arthritis. Had cortisone injection which she said may or may not work. Said my thumb was already bone on bone and would continue to get worse to the point of disability, I'm a nurse in the ER, love to knit and quilt and am not ready to be disabled. Any one have any ideas???

Theresa,
I've taken Glucosamine for years and it makes a big difference for me, though I know it doesn't work for everyone.
Check on diet options. I know when I eat more sugar, around the holidays it brings on a lot of aches. One friend of mine with arthritis is sugar free at this point and swears by it.

I am having my mother try it now. She suffers from arthritis.

Kristina, how do you make homemade gingerale? I would love to know. I have made tea by slicing a little ginger and pouring hot water over it...tasted slightly lemony and not really spicy like what you buy.

Have you tried drinking ginger tea or homemade ginger ale? (fresh ginger in the recipes, not the dried, ground)

I have arthritis seemingly Everywhere! I know the nsaids are rated bad, but I couldn't function without Celebrex. I crochet and quilt, draw and garden. I just learn you need to constantly change motions. It is not fair, but you can live with it. Learn to relax and listen to your body (ho, ho) I know that sounds crazy but believe it or not warm dish water or those wax baths are great. If they get the cortisone shot in the right place, you will be feeling 100% better. It takes some time to find out if it works. Good luck and God bless........

I had a similar diagnosis about six years ago. Ortho guy suggested a joint replacement, but told me to wait as long as possible because they don't know how long they last and I was kind of young for it. (44 yo, at the time) So, I have waited. Through waiting up at night with my thumbs hurting so badly because I pulled the blanket up. I have dropped pots and chipped our porcelain sink ... I have dropped everything! Well, last year my left thumb - the one that got worse first - started to feel better. Apparently, if you leave the joint alone, it sort of fuses on its own. Granted this took years. The pain is much better. My grip has improved some. I still knit, etc. It seems the key there is to not stop. Once you stop ... it's tough to start up again.

Good luck ... I hope your case improves some, as mine has. I am so glad I did not have surgery.
