I have delt with fibromyalgia for 20+ years. Then last year a diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis(auto-immune disease). Last year was so rough on me and hubby. This illness almost destroyed our marriage. Thru support and my own research I'm making a lifestyle change. I now follow the Paleo food plan. And I'm cleaning out all the chemicals in my home. I'm into better cleaners. So I begin my journey towards better physical and mental health. For those who have a chronic illness, what changes in your life/diet ect have you made? Maybe we can share ideas for healthier living.

It's nice to find a post of others who understand what it is like to deal with daily pain. I too have been weeding out the chemiclas for the past few years and I too do "no poo" as it's called on another sight I am on...using the baking soda and water and the apple cider vinegar and water as needed, with just water in between. I think the big thing is to massage your scalp really well. The baking soda helps with the dirty sometimes oily feeling and the apple cider vinegar is like a conditioner...yet also helps loosen the dry scalp. Does anyone have some simple and very easy on the joints ways of moving to keep mobility and do some small amount of exercise? I have difficulty walking but, amdetermined to try and chnage that!

Thankfully, I haven't had these kinds of chronic illnesses to deal with. I have had to deal with chronic pain situations however and those can be very debilitating.
Years ago I was dealing with TMJ (temporomandibular joint . . .which is the jaw joint) pain. Had all kinds of adjustments, bite splints, wisdom teeth extracted, etc. which was only minimally helpful. The main factor contributing to my pain was STRESS! It's really hard to make lifestyle changes to reduce stress very quickly. But after some changes in job situations, family issues, etc. over the years that has gone away. The only time it flares is when I have to go to the dentist and the long period of "messing" with my mouth just make it hurt, but it is temporary. I'm thankful to be past this.

In recent years I started having work related neck, shoulder, back and arm pain . . . working as a caregiver for my sister who is totally dependent and disabled due to a traumatic brain injury from a horseback riding accident in May 2006. I worked with her for over four years and about two years into that "career" it just started hitting me hard. I made some changes in how I worked with her in lifting/transferring, etc. and that helped. But not enough! The last year of my work with her I started seeing a chiropracter (the same one that her hubby took her to, so he KNEW the situation well) and that helped.

This job took a huge toll on me physically, emotionally and mentally . . . she is my sister! I had to make the decision to quit as her CAREGIVER and just be her sister! My "career" with her ended the end of August, 2012. The difference is AMAZING! I guess I just didn't realize how much trauma that was causing physically! And, as far as emotionally and mentally . . . I can go see her and just visit with her! The HARDEST job I've ever had and the decision to quit EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!
Less money . . . but less stress and pain!
Changes can be so hard to make!

Cozynana--
I have seasonal allergies as well. Detoxing is a way of life for my family and it has helped a lot. The house that my parents built is detoxing by itself, but my mother and myself have worked with several practioners and our local doctor is amazingly helpful. Without doing a detoxing program slowly I wouldn't have my daughter... who I was newly pregnant with at the time my chemical allergies became debilitating. I am doing much better than I was 4 years ago, even better than a year ago. I am very blessed and am always happy to share information with other people. The main product that I have used is NCD which is zeolite based. My whole family uses that :)

shanda, Thanks for the shampoo info. Faithfulchick, sorry to hear you hubby was not strong enough to stick by his woman. I admire your dad did stay around and support your mom, that is so important. Do you have other symptoms other than chemical allergies. Are you detoxing? I used to have tons of reactions and allergies. After a continual detox program I can say I don't get as sick and very few reactions now. Good luck in your journey.

Chronic ilnesses are difficult to deal with. My mother and myself have severe chemical allergies and it dictates our life. I have seen what it can do to a marriage as well as my husband of 6 months stated he didn't want to be married to a sick wife he was too young. (this was shortly after my allergies became severe) I should mention that my father on the other hand is one good man to stick by mom through all of this. ( My parents built a chemical free home for my mother, not an easy task)
Surrounding yourself with a strong support system is key.
Will be praying for you

Cozynana, What I do is supper simple. I have two containers, in one I put about 2-3 TBSP of baking soda. In the other I put about 1/2 cup of apple cider vineger. When I'm in the shower, I add about a cup of water to the baking soda and pour it on my dry hair. Then I massage into my scalp (it, of course dosen't lather at all). Then I rinse my hair really good, add about 2 cups of water to the vineger and pour on my hair. I let it sit while I take care of everything else, then rinse my hair really good again. Any smell from the vineger is gone by the time my hair is dry. My scalp was always dry and covered in rash, nothing I bought or my hairdresser had would make it better. After doing this once, my scalp was fine. I only do this wash about once a week in the winter, and twice or more in the summer. My other shower times I just rinse my hair with water. I hope that is helpful!

I'm dealing with the yeast beast now. I use Dr Bronner's baby/unscented liquid castile soap to make my own shampoo, face/body wash and use in laundry. Also the castile soap and apple cider vinegar together will clean kitchen/bathrooms.

Tara,

I have been trying to live a healthier lifestyle for sometime now. Water is a staple. Also I know how important it is to avoid sugar as much as possible as I have food allergies and sensitivities especially to sugar.
A website that I recently found is called The Body Ecology by Donna Gates. There is much information on it about living a healthy lifestyle by making the right food choices and avoiding chemicals and processed foods. There is an awful thing called "Candida Yeast" that would apparently be the culprit for so many unexplained illnesses. Doctors do tests after tests and still cannot find out the cause for a multitude of illnesses. A lot of times it is the Candida Yeast in the body out of balance that is causing all of the negative effects on ones health. Prayerfully as you get rid of chemicals and make good food choices your health will improve.

Blessings and Hugs,

Judy

Shanda, I would be interested in your shampoo recipe if you would share. I love to make my own stuff, that way I know exactly what is in it.

I have changed almost everything. The cleaners I use, they are all as organic as possible. I don't use store bought shampoo, deo, facewash, soap or toothpaste: I home make all of it. I watch what I eat, drink and breathe. I'm excersizing gently (too much makes me flare up) and I sleep as much as I can. I use to get only about 4 hrs of sleep a night, I was just in to much pain. Now I can sometimes sleep up to 6 hrs without waking up. Not always, but enough to help. It's an ongoing battle that some days I think I can handle. Yesterday Fibro won, I had to leave work. But, I'm hoping if I continue on fighting and not give in, I'll be able to deal with this better. Let me know what you find that works.

Tara, Do you have other autoimmune diseases? Do you have symptoms that are unexplainable? I ended up testing positive for Lyme disease after 30 plus years of symptoms. I first thought I had Fibro, Chronic fatigue syndrome, and who knows what else. If you do not get better and seem to have symptoms that change I would encourage you to get tested for Lyme. There is an Igenex Lyme test that is the gold standard for testing. The mainstream test done in a doctors office is a waste of money. Many people are finding they have Lyme if they also have Fibro, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, MS, ALS, Insomnia, etc. I am not saying you have Lyme, just another option if you get down the road and need one. Let me know if I can be of assistance or want to chat.

I detox all the time. I think it would help you to. we bought a Far Infa Red Sauna I sit in about three times a week, I also do foot detox baths at my chiropractor's, I drink about 3 liters of water a day and that is the only thing I drink, I also follow a diet stricter than the paleo. I can not do any carbs including fruit. I do not use commercial cleaners either. My friend has fibro and does eastern acupunture, between that and tramadol for pain she is much better. Read up on inflammation, there are drugs and herbs that can help with that. Hot showers in the middle of the night helped my pain the most. I think the diet change not eating anything white like bread, potatoes, and sugar, plus giving up night shades like tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers help my pain tremendously. I try to get lost of rest and live a more sedate and low impact life now.

Tara: I have a couple of friends dealing with fibromyalgia. I'll pass this message to them. I don't think they are aware of this. Thanks so much.
