I've been sitting on this for some time and some may have seen my other posts regarding gallbladder queries.

And to set the record, I did see my neuroligist last week who doesn't seem to think my stomach issues are related to this drug since I have been on it for so long. So please read and see what you think

Seems we have come full circle- or perhaps not-- so I'll post here for a little support and maybe somebody will think of something that wasn't thought of too.

I've been on Topamax for migraines since last August and have had minimal side effects. Some weight loss as a result of not wanting to drink as much diet pepsi, and a little tingling in the tips of my fingers when it gets cold.

March 17 was the marker for the beginning of this mess when that morning I thought I was going to literally be sick at work. That feeling passed but the fullness in my stomach and not wanting to really eat did not...nor did I really have the desire to eat much the next day. No stomach ache per se.

After this day I have had a heckeva time trying to eat regular full meals. I can only eat a little bit before REALLY feeling like a 10 course meal has been consumed. No pain, no bloating, belching, no intestinal problems. I feel great otherwise. Have had one other "gee I"m gonna be sick" feeling at night which also passed.

I have had an ultrasound for gallbladder and will get results back Tuesday

Have also done a bit of research on gastroparesis (gross in extreme cases) This is basically lazy stomach where food sits or is digested VERY slowly. I'm suspicious but hoping this isn't the case since I haven;t had gastric bypass nor am I diabetic or overweight

But I believe this antisiezure/migraine prevention drug has affected the NERVE in my stomach that also affects how full or hungry I feel. I do get the hungry signal but do get that full feeling very quickly after trying to eat.

Next step after Tuesday- if results come back negative will be for an endoscope.

right now I don't wish to do a gallbladder flush--in case there MAY be stones that might block the ducts an make me feel worse

Any thoughts?

I'm hoping to get this resolved way before July since we have a family cruise planned and have already paid for it.

Thank you!! Was relieved to know for sure!!

So pretty much when our food is digsted, as it empties into the small intestine it's mixed w/ bile at this juncture here. Some is apparently leaking back into my stomach --especially when high fat foods are being eaten.

And in my case, this is ,or was happening with the daily ingestion of spoons of nut butters every morning for breakfast and the popcorn chickens I so dearly love from Sonic and Wal Mart. Those were the main culrpets that made the worst symptoms disappear once I eliminated them from my diet.

Not too sure what the Prilosec is supposed to do, but perhaps reduce the bad chemical reaction when stomach acid and bile accidentally collide.

So with this new bit of news, I don't get cart blanche to eat my old favorites again. Quite the contrary, which makes me very sad. I had a small bit of salad dressing which did the same thing - only the symptom didn't last near as long or as severe just yesterday. It's too soon anyway that 's for sure too.

The other really scary thing, which I'm going to inquire about when I go back, is that if this becomes a big problem, there is a chance that bile relfux in extreme cases CAN cause irritation which leads to stomach cancers. (Accroding to the most recent research I have been doing on the computer) I guess that's why they took those biopsies.

And like I said, I'm just glad there not some giant mass overtaking or a hole either!!

FINALLY got some answers when I went in the other day and got an endoscope procedure!

So far, dr seems to think it's bile reflux.

That's not supposed to happen. He took 2 biopsy samples and I'll get those results back this week. Also put me on Prilosec to reduce stomach acid for a month to see if that helps.

Procedure went well...just felt a little off for that afternoon which I spent napping anyway.

So , not out of the woods, but it's not an ulcer or cancer--YEA!

Well???

Tests from yesterday came back all normal, so I get to keep my gallbladder.

Next steps will be to get an endoscope. And that's scheduled for June.

Ate a salad today and it was wonderful

One day at a time

Went in for 2nd set of tests yesterday

That was the most expensive 2 hour nap I have ever taken!

Will hopefully hear about results today!

My mom is an RN and she sat down w/ me yesterday. Together we thumbed through the phone book for a differedt dr. One who specializes in gastro internal medicine.

So once all this blows over, I'll use this other person--assuming they take new patients.
The GP I see now is nice and has good bedside manner, but I feel doesn't really LISTEN! That, and the walls are paper thin. So much for HEPA laws ha ha

I know all too well about 2nd and 3rd referrals when seeking answers. I lost a friend to kidney cancer.

Thank you both very much.

Right now I'm in a quandry.

Hoping tomowrrows test is negative...but at the same time maybe it will shed some light on something too??

Due to all the hoop jumping. tomorrow (thursday) I go to get yet another gallbladder test. This one is called a Biliary Scan.

AndI bet you money the scan comes back negative. I'm just feeling too good for gallbladder to be affected since I have frineds whose were affected

AND.....the first thought I had was stomach cancer....thanks to Web MD. So I've already scared myself pretty badly. I do have a Gastroenterologist at the Duke hospitals (thanks to 2 colonoscopies and colon cancer/polyps that run in the family) but due to insurance....and general practitioners and all their red tape.....I'm jumping through hoops right now.

The VERY next call will be to Dr. Wilson at Duke,....and it couldn't be fast enough!!

So I know the next forum below will be for some prayers!

Go to www.drugs.com and read the side affects of Topamax. In the area of serious side affects it lists severe or presistent loss of appetite. As for the doctor saying it probably not the Topamax because you have been on it for a while, not always the case. I was on Lipitor for 5 years before I started having adverse effects and ditto with one antidepressant.

I agree with Kim.. too often we listen to one doctor, when we should be getting a second oppinion from another doctor.

Find a GOOD gastrointestinal specialist.

Please get it checked right away. My friends husband had the same symptoms and it turned out to be stomach cancer. Don't mean to be an alarmist but it would be best to rule that out and find out what is causing it.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kim
