I am 57 and have the worse skin. Broken out with red splotches age spots pimples and dry scaly patches. I have always just been a soap and water girl but really need some new ideas. HELP

I love face masks and I've played around with a lot of homemade stuff like that. Honey is great...just apply a layer of honey, let it sit for a while, and wash it off. Oatmeal is a nice soothing mask...grind oats into a flour and mix with enough milk to make a paste. Avocado masks are nice...cream half an avocado, mix in a little (teaspoon or so) of honey, and some yogurt (I want to say a tablespoon.) I also do oil cleansing and love that as well. I forget what kind of oils I used, but I made a mix...I want to say castor and olive, maybe? I mixed up enough to fill a little bottle at the time, and I still have a lot. I always follow up every cleansing method or mask with jojoba to moisturize.

I love researching natural facial care. :) Drinking lots of water is a must and eating healthy helps tremendously. You don't want toxins in your body coming out on your face!

We got some Cerave samples in at work a while back and I've been using that for my skin (it was really bad--psoriasis, dry/scales, pimples, spots, etc) then I went to buy full sized bottles but it is quite expensive, so I bought the Walgreen's brand and it is working just as well. My skin is really looking good and feels better too.

When my roommate worked in a nursing home there was a beautiful woman there that was close to 90. Her secret was Preparation H. We looked at the ingredients to see what was in it but never tried it.

When I worked at the nursing home one of the ladies was 76 and had the most beautiful skin out of all the people there so I asked her what her secret was. She said "lanolin" and showed me and sure enough it was pure lanolin. She also said there were lots of naysayers but she kept to it just like the other women in her family tree and she kept her beautiful skin. She said she started it in her late 20's and early 30's and never had a problem with her skin. I know its a sheep product and I've been considering trying it out for myself too because the results were absolutely incredible. Her skin on her hands and face didn't look a day over 50 and here she was 76! I still can't believe it!

I was wondering about that Michelle. I have some jojoba oil, I may just try that and use my honey's soap for the rest of me :)

Oil cleansing really helped my skin. It sounds weird, but it works. I use jojoba oil, but there are whole websites about oil cleansing that will suggest other oils/oil combinations. You massage the oil into your skin, then place a steamy hot washcloth on your face and leave it there until it cools - no rubbing. You repeat the washcloth a few more times til your skin isn't oily anymore and that's it. Like any time you change your cleansing or moisturizing routine it can seem like your skin is worse for a few days until it clears up. I've been lazy about doing the oil cleansing lately (just been using soap) and my skin is starting to look terrible. I need to go buy some jojoba oil.

Diana,

My skin has changed so much since I am over the 40 mark now (heading close to 50). I do drink plenty of water (my main staple) and try to eat healthy which makes a difference.

My husband started making soap last year and it has been great for my skin, in fact I like it better than the Weleda and Avalon products I used to use. He does use Shea Butter in the soap. Like Fran said it is really good for your skin.

Weleda makes a wonderful facial moisturizer that I love: http://www.vitacost.com/weleda-soothing-facial-cream-almond
It is mild and actually helps with the smile lines around my eyes :)

I like the new cleanser by Burts Bees that is for sensitive skin. Like Prairie Hawk, I find the moisturizers by Avalon good, but they are very rich so if you are breaking out, you may need something lighter. Burts Bees Radiance is lightweight, so I use that sometimes, too.

You might try some creamy face cleansers such as the ones from Burts Bees. Soap dries out your skin. Avalon Organics makes a facial moisturizer that has sunscreen and vitamin C. It's a little pricey but worth it. Walgreen also carries something called Bio-Oil that takes care of lots of skin problems. It's supposed to help heal scars and other imperfections. Not that anyone has perfect skin.

I just recently became a huge fan of shea butter. You have to find the good kind though, what your looking for is the light colored shea that very soft. For some reason they're packaging shea with flour or corn startch which makes it brick hard & difficult to use.

I feel in complete love with the stuff about month ago. I have really bad skin on the backs of my hands from the dish soap they use in the resturant where I work & untill I started using shea nothing was working to get rid of it. I was also starting to notice I was getting laugh lines & it quickly smoothed those down so they're no so noticable.

The only thing is its alittle oily when you put it on so I wouldn't wear it & makeup at the same time. I noticed however if you pat off the extra shea with a towel it doesn't feel so oily.
