I went to the eye doctor on Friday, and after looking through all the combinations of lenses,I was still viewing things with a bit of a blur. He decided to dilate my eyes and discovered the culprit- a cataract right in the center of my field of vision in my right eye. All I could think was- "Gee whiz- I'm only 48!!!" And he said-"Gosh! You're awfully young for this!" Perfect.
He basically told me there isn't anything I can do about it until I get to a certain stage of vision loss, and then they will do surgery. I was wondering if any of the farmgirls have experience with cataracts and if they have been successful in thwarting their progression. My mom and grandmother both had cataract surgery, so it must run in our family. Oh joy, oh rapture. I coudn't get any of the cool stuff passed on to me!!
Anywho- if any of you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Karin

I promise to eat my spinach- just not from a bag!! I just read about bilberry this weekend and it looks promising. I already take Vitamin E and C, and have been eating more whole fruits and veggies- lots of Vitamin A sources. I hadn't heard about the riboflavin though. I've added turmeric capsules as a supplement for it's antioxidant properties. Getting old is the pits at the moment. I'll be happy when this is all sorted and I can "focus" on other things!!
Janice- Thank you for checking for this info for me- you are so thoughtful.

I checked my Holistic Health textbook("Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine") and bilberry extract plus vitamin E are recommended to stop cataract progression. I think I found the bilberry capsules in Walmart, as well as health food stores. They also recommend a diet high in high-carotene content veggies, like leafy greens, yams, carrots and broccoli. I also check any supplements I take for riboflavin content, because it reacts with sunlight to cause free radicals and cataract patients should not have more than 10 mg. of riboflavin a day. Selenium is also recommend as a supplement. I'm also wearing sunglasses when I'm outside now, as much to prevent macular degeneration down the road as cataracts now. Wow! I sound like my granny! Eat your spinach! Wear your sunglasses! :)

I agree that too much avoidance of the sun is detrimental to a lot of our systems, but in order to block out 100% of UV rays you'd have to be wearing goggles. The sunlight still comes in around the glasses.

Karin,
Remember your pineal gland behind your eyes needs full spectrum light to function properly, so sunglasses all the time will cut the light that you need too.
Seems like a nasty cycle doesn't it, do this to help that but will affect that.
Just my 2 cents.
If I come across anything else I'll pass along.

Thank you, Ladies!! I have been reading up quite a bit, and vitamins are very much recommended. I am going to get a second opinion as well. Thanks, Tina!!
Janice- I have not heard of Similisan for eyes. I knew about the ear one. I will check out WallyWorld and see if they have it. Rats, I was just there this afternoon! I am also wearing sunglasses when I go outside as the UV rays tend to hasten the development of cataracts. Honestly- if it isn't one thing, it's another. I was out picking Kudzu blossoms this afternoon ( more jelly!) and forgot them- all I could think of was what kind of evil thing was going on in my right eyeball!! (That and whether or not this huge, striped brown spider was going to jump on me or not! )
I am doing my best to have a "take-charge" attitude about this. I am not one to sit back and let things take over.
I'm glad that the farmgirls are here! You are the best.

Karin - I'm also 'too young' for cataracts. While reading my dad's copy of AARP magazine, I found an ad for homeopathic eyedrops called 'Similasan'. They cost about $10.00 and I first found them at Walmart, but the last time I bought them in a grocery store(Kroger's). I took a class on holistic health and my textbook has vitamins to take that are supposed to slow cataracts(I started doing that, but I fell by the wayside). I'll look it up this weekend and post it for you on Monday. I like the drops,(I also have'dry eyes' and 'floaters') and the vitamins did seem to help(I need to try them again). I, too seem to have inherited weak eyes (from my mom's side of the family).

Oh Karin, sorry to hear that!
My mom has cataracts, but she also has a lazy eye, so we need to let it go as long as possible, which is soon, to do something.
I did come across (1) home treatment, but I don't know enough about it,
and haven't been able to cross reference it.

Just wanted to pass it along

can you get a second opinion? seems strange to have to wait until something gets worse to get it fixed.I guess I'm never one to take the first answer on something.I'd go and get a second opinion at least.

Oh Karin! that stinks!! My mom had cateracts in both eyes...really advanced before she finally got checked and they were discovered. She got very good results with the Lazix (sp?) surgery.
I hope someone knows how to slow them down for you!
